Macbeth Essay Some say that the future is predetermined; however, others may say that the future is based solely on fate which influence a person’s choices and actions. Either way, every person has dreams, hopes, goals, and ambitions. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the influences on Macbeth change him as a person and negatively alter his ambitions. Macbeth’s altered ambitions lead him to a state of distress and ultimately guide him to his own death. Macbeth’s actions must be attributed solely to fate because of the influences of the witches, Lady Macbeth, and his altered ambitions have on Macbeth. The witches Macbeth encounters at the beginning of the play are the primary motive for Macbeth’s actions. They manipulate Macbeth and lead him to unlawful actions. (2.2.39-40). Furthermore, he hears voices calling out to him: “Methought, I heard a voice cry, “Sleep no more! / Macbeth does murder sleep”-the innocent sleep,” (2.2.47-48). Macbeth experiences extreme paranoia and he attempts to eliminate every hindrance to his kingship. In the first prognostication, the witches say that Banquo’s children will be kings. Macbeth fears Banquo and plans to murder him and his son Fleance: “the seed of Banquo kings! / Rather than so, come, fate into the list, And champion me to the utterance!” (3.1.74-76). Banquo is successfully murdered; however, contradictory to Macbeth’s plan, Fleance escapes. Ambition in Macbeth leads him to a state of distress and ultimately, leads him to his own demise. Macbeth’s decisions and actions are associated with the influences of the witches, Lady Macbeth, and his modified desires. Fate determines Macbeth’s actions which ultimately leads him to his death. Macbeth’s state of distress causes to do unlawful actions. These actions cause people to want revenge on him.
