Macbeth and Chris Kyle: The Last Shot Tragic heroes are present in any time period, and in any lifestyle or occupation. Two examples of a tragic hero are Macbeth from The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare and the recently passed military symbol, Chris Kyle. The story of Macbeth was written in the 1600’s and was set in Scotland. Macbeth is a character whose ambition for power ended up killing him. Chris Kyle is known as ‘The American Sniper’ and is honored for being one of the brave men and women who chose to serve for his country. Though their motives for success greatly differ, they both posses qualities that make them a tragic hero. Macbeth’s ambition was good, everyone wants to have power and be the best of the best. But unlike Macbeth, most people would not kill others to gain this power. The three witches planted it in his head saying “All hail, Macbeth, thou shalt be king hereafter!” (Shakespeare 1.3.50). Once Macbeth believed he would become king he did all that he could to make the witches predictions come true. Because of this, Macbeth was flawed by his ambition. He did morally wrong this and this led him to develope a haunted conscience. Chris Kyle’s flaw was also his ambition. “It’s the ones you couldn’t save. Those are the ones you talk about. Those are the faces and situations that stay with you forever” (Kyle, American Sniper pg 234). Kyle experienced this because he felt like everyone was out to hurt him and his country. Because of his job he felt like he had to eliminate all threats and detected threats even when there were none. Ambition was a flaw to him because it eventually made him develop PTSD.
