Cancer is an ever increasing issue throughout the world today. If you were told you were at high risk of having cancer, how would you react? Would you face the fact you have a low probable chance of living and cherish your last years, or would you find ways to avert this scenario from occurring? Most people are affected by cancer in some way and cope with the problem differently. One of the most common and deadly cancer is lung cancer. It is the leading cancer death for both men and women. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer causes 7.6 million deaths globally and 1.37 million of the deaths are from lung cancer, the most out of all other cancers. Although lung cancer is widespread, one can deal with the fact of possibly …show more content…
The abnormal cells divide rapidly and form tumors. There are two types of tumors as well as lung cancers. Benign tumors are tumors that remain in one place and do not spread. Malignant tumors, which are more dangerous, spread to other parts of the body. When the cancerous cells expand, it is harder to treat successfully. The two types of lung cancers are primary lung cancer, where it originates in the lung, and secondary lung cancer, where it starts from somewhere else in the body, and spreads to the lungs. As the tumors grow larger and numerous, they weaken the lung’s ability to supply the bloodstream with oxygen. Furthermore, most lung cancers are the result of inhaling carcinogenic substances. Carcinogens are directly responsible for damaging DNA and causing cancer. Examples of this class of substances are radiations such as x-rays, the sun, compounds in car exhaust fumes, and the main cause for lung cancer, tobacco. According to What Is Lung Cancer?, about 87% of lung cancers are related to smoking and inhaling the carcinogens in tobacco smoke. The individuals who are affected by lung cancer may show symptoms years later, usually when the disease has already reached the advanced stage. Some symptoms include persistent or intense coughing, difficulty breathing and swallowing, hoarseness of the voice, coughing up blood, and many more. In order to completely diagnose lung cancer, …show more content…
Cancer could be prevented through various healthy lifestyle choices and nutrition, however, it cannot be fully stopped. This may be due to outside factors as well as the choices one makes. An environmental factor is exposure to radon in the home. Radon is a radioactive gas that is produced by the natural decay of uranium in the soil and is found in areas such as cracks in the foundation of homes. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and leading cause for non-smokers. According to Environmental Causes of Lung Cancer, an estimated 21,000 people develop lung cancer from radon each year. A person’s occupation may also cause them to have an increased risk to lung cancer. An occupational exposure is working with asbestos, such as working with asbestos insulation in homes. Without proper protection, exposure to asbestos too much can result in lung cancer. Even with precaution, sometimes cancer just cannot be stopped. However, that does not mean a person should be careless with their everyday choices. In order to lead a life of anticancer, each individual should exercise daily, for at least 30 minutes, while eating healthy food such as fruits and vegetables, and not so much sugary and processed food. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), they estimated that 30% to 40% of cancers could be prevented based on a healthy diet and moderate exercise alone. Every choice
According to “Medical News Today” cancer is a disease that is caused by an over growth of anomalous cells on one or more lungs. Cells often go up the air pipes which can cause difficulty to breath. Due to the over production of cells the tissue cells often begin to over produce; which results in tumors. There are two types of tumors: malignant and benign. Malignant tumors are the more dangerous of the two due to its invasive nature; which makes it cancerous. While benign is not invasive in other words non-cancerous. This is why cancer spreads to multiple areas and can be sometimes very difficult to fight. Cancer cells are abnormal not only because of their evasive nature, but also because of its irregular life cycle. Rather than expire like a regular cell, they continuously grow and duplicate which causes the disease to spread. This makes cell abnormal in shape and other qualities; known as a sickle cell. Due to the large growth and reproduction rate of the cells this makes the spreading of the cancer more rapid. Each cancer has specific symptom, for lung cancer the sympto...
Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of many cells that appears in one lung or even both. This type of cancer generally lines the air passages in the lungs. These uncontrolled cells grow, not becoming cell tissue, but into tumors (Crosta). Tumors form because the abnormal cells in the lungs are not the right lung cells. They are mutated and cannot be killed like normal. Once the known tumors become oversized, they take over and cause the lung or lungs not to do their jobs (Crosta). There is primary Lung Cancer and secondary. Primary lung cancer is treated differently than secondary because, primary starts in the lungs, while secondary starts somewhere else in the body, making its way to the lungs. Lung cancer is grouped in two categories ' which are non-small cell and small cell (Marks). There are four different types of cancer.
Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in the world. There are three main types of lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, and lung carcinoid tumor. Just like any other cancer, lung cancer is dangerous, and a life threatening problem. Many studies and researches have been presented to find a cure, but an exact cure has yet to be found. There are however multiple causes, ways to diagnose, and treatments for lung cancer.
Ostrow, N. (2011). Screening for lung cancer with chest x-ray doesn’t cut deaths, study finds. Retrieved from http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-26/screening-for-lung-cancer-with-chest-x-rays-doesn-t-cut-deaths.html.
Over 140,000 Americans die each year from lung cancer. One of the biggest causes of Lung cancer is smoking there is more than 50 different chemicals that can cause cancer in a cigarette. Second Hand smoking can also cause lung cancer if you’re exposed to secondhand smoke. The body system that lung cancer affects is the respiratory system. In all types of cancer some of the body cells begin to divide without stopping and can spread into surrounding tissue which can is the structure and function. But then the respiratory system starts to malfunction and cause problems in the body.
Non-small-cell lung cancer is more common than small-cell lung cancer. It makes up about 80 percent of all diagnosed lung cancers. It is actually four different kinds of lung cancers that grow and respond to treatment in about the same way. These four types of non-small-cell lung cancer are termed squamous cell, adencarcinoma, large cell, and mixed cell. Two other related cancers that are also included in the non-small-cell lung cancers group are carcinoid and mesothelioma. Non-small-cell lung cancer grows more slowly than small-cell lung cancer. Non-small-cell lung cancer tends to grow first in the area where it started then invades the surrounding lung tissue and ribs. It eventually spreads to other areas of the body, mainly bones, brain, and liver.
No one, no matter how weak or strong, rich or poor, tall or small, is safe from the reach of cancer. Cancer is a dangerous disease killing millions every year without any for sure or easy way to treat it. For years people have tried to raise awareness towards cancer but now that it threatens the lives of so many do people listen and try to help. However even with the help of dozens of different groups and agencies cancer rates continue to grow at an alarming rate. Although we have found ways to treat it we only have theories on how to prevent and stop it. What make cancer so deadly are its Symptoms, commonness, dangerous treatments, the many different areas it can affect, and the cost encored.
Lung cancer forms from abnormal growth of the cells. Since cancer comes from the cells, cancer stars in the lining of your lungs bronchi and also some parts of your bronchioles and alveoli. “Cancers
To fully interpret the two types of lung cancer, one needs to have an understanding of what cancer is. In science class most learn about biology and the fact that the human body consists of not only blood, bones, and organs, but also cells. It is these cells that cancer can form. Cancer develops when the cells develop abnormally forming tumors. Tumors appear in all areas of the human body. “The two types of lung cancer are small cell lung cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer” (Jones 1). In a recent article Jones explains both types of cancer and the inequality in growth rates. Jones states, “Small cell lung cancer is the least common only resulting in twelve percent of cases. Although it is less common, it is highly invasive” (1). One would presume that small cell lung cancer has a lower chance of recovery. Jones also states, “Non-small cell lung cancer is very common and is found in eighty-seven percent of cases, but has a lower growth rate” (1). For this reason, non-small cell lung cancer would escalate the chance of rehabilitation. Similarly, both these types of lung cancer, although equally vexatious can grow at different rates, ultimately giving the patient more or less time to overcome the
Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. It occurs when a malignant tumor develops within the lungs causing cell mutations. There are two main types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), non-small cell lung cancer accounts for 85 percent of lung cancers whereas small cell lung cancer accounts for 10-15 percent. Non-small cell lung cancer can be categorized into three different types: adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. Adenocarcinoma is the most common subtype of non-small cell lung cancer. It accounts for 30 - 35 percent of primary lung tumors. Squamous cell carcinoma occurs when abnormal lung cells multiply out of control resulting in the formation of a tumor (Harvard Health Publications). Squamous cell carcinoma is the second-most common type of non-small cell lung cancer. It
Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world. There are many ways to attract lung cancer. Many people think that the only way to get cancer is by being a smoker but believe it or not you can get cancer without ever even smoking a cigarette. There also are different forms of lung cancer some are life threatening and others aren’t. My goal is for you to know everything about and or dealing with Lung Cancer by the end of this paper. Throughout this paper I will elaborate on those topics and I will also talk about some of the symptoms, and ways to prevent attracting it, cures and a few more topics.
Many people have suffered life threatening injuries or even killed people because of cancer and how many cancers it causes.” Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in the world and 1.2 million people develop it each year”(lung). Just because of cigarettes it is the reason for 90 percent of all lung cancer cases. But what’s even
Research indicates that when people are diagnosed with cancer, they inherit a variety of financial issues associated with time spent receiving medical care, time is also taken off from work and other activities. Not only do the patients' inherit the financial cost their caregivers and family member also do. (Yabroff, Lund, Kepka, Mariotto, 2011)
Cancer is defined as where the abnormal cells are divided without any control and they are able to invade into tissues. At times cancer can be cured right away once it is detected through treatments that the doctor recommends, but at times cancer cannot be cured based on what stage the cancer is at. It is very important that every individual gets a physical check up to see if they are diagnosed or detected with any sort of cancer or disease. There are 100 types of cancers out there, but the type of cancer that I will be focusing on is Lung cancer. One of the controversial issues on a lung cancer is the ...
Studies have proven that there is no safe way to smoke. Tobacco contains many dangerous cancer causing chemicals that affects the lungs of the smoker and the nonsmoker, so smoking just a little amount can increase your chances of getting lung cancer. The Surgeon General has said that "smoking is the single most important cause of death in our society, and it is responsible for more than one out of every five deaths in the United States." The purpose of this report is to inform and educate the reader about smoking and why it is considered the biggest cause of lung cancer. This subject is near and dear to me because my grandfather, who was once a heavy smoker, is now fighting this awful disease. The only way to protect yourself against this killer disease is to never start smoking or to stop smoking if you are a smoker.
