Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the world, accounting for about one out of nine tumors in women and one out of five malignancies in men. Medically, lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells in the lungs. The uncontrolled reproduction of cells results in the formation of tumors that may block or compress airways and damage normal lung tissue. Most lung tumors start in the edging of the bronchi, or in glands below the lining of bronchi. The result is a deadly disease that has a major effect on the lives of its victims. There are two main types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer, which is also called oat cell cancer, is not as common as non-small cell lung cancer.
