Low Context Communication Lead to Increased Conflict

From celebrity twitter feuds, to Facebook bullying the online world is rife with conflict. Online classrooms are no different from these online jungles, where words can be easily misconstrued in the low-context environment of computer-mediated-communication (CMC). Conflicting values are imminent in diverse group settings, but online-only, low context communication leads to increased conflict. The first line of defense for managing conflict is the use of online mediation. A secondary line of defense for resolving conflict and preventing future conflict is to change the textual communication to face-to-face communication using video conferencing technology, in addition to building awareness around conflict management styles. Several strategies can be used to reduce and end conflict. In discussing potential conflict between students in a community college online class, I will examine value conflict between five women from diverse backgrounds who have had none to little contact with each other independent of the online environment. Michelle Charisse Munyer was born on October 26th, 1978 in Sacramento, CA and has lived in the bay area since she was 12. She has been attending classes at BCC since 2010, after she suffered an accident, which left her unable to work. Although she never graduated from High School, she is graduating from BCC with two AA’s in Fine Art and Liberal Art’s A&H. Berlena Gullett was born in St. Pierce, Florida and is the youngest girl out of her nine siblings. She grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey but has lived in Texas, Arizona, Florida and now currently resides in California. As a child she lived in a group home until she was emancipated at age eighteen. In the classroom, the teacher commonly acts as the moderator of the forum, but in other online communities the moderator is usually a third party individual who may not been interculturally competent. Online communication host’s unique opportunities for education but the time lapses, absence of social, visual and auditory cues create a communication handicap.
