In Louis Lowry’s novel The Giver, Jonas’ world has been turned upside down. He goes

from knowing nothing about the real world and being carefree in the beginning, to watching the

release and leaving the community at the end of the book. As Jonas learns more about the past,

he starts to question everything about the community and all the decisions made for him. Jonas

maturity level shoots up like a rocket throughout the book, he does not make any decisions on his

own in the beginning, but he does in the end.

First, Jonas does not know a great deal about the real world. He volunteers at many

places once he turns 11. The Elders do this to determine what job Jonas needs. He goes to school

during the day and also plays games after school
