Dystopian movies are mostly based on an imaginary, undesirable society. Dystopian movies are often based on themes that play out in the real world. The Dystopian movie, “I am Legend “ by Francis Lawrence, has the theme of loss of humanity. In the movie, Dr. Robert Neville is trying to cure the virus that's affecting the city of New York. Many people in New York have died from this virus and Robert is trying his best to solve this problem. Throughout the movie, the theme Loss of Humanity was used to describe the story and the literary devices and universal storytelling element that were used in the movie are sacrifice love, symbolism, how the emotions affect the audience, and the flashbacks. The Bob Marley CD in the movie, “I am Legend,” is one symbol that relates to the theme of loss of humanity. The Bob Marley CD was used throughout the movie as symbolism to Robert Neville’s daughter Marley. He named his daughter after the Bob Marley CD because he knew that Bob Marley wanted to change racism in human lives, which symbolizes the importance of the CD. The Butterfly was used throughout the movie as symbolism to Robert Neville's life. The butterfly is a symbol of change, and transformation. The symbol of the Butterfly was most important at the end of the movie because Robert Neville gave up his life to change the life from bad to good, and he wanted to help save many lives of others. Marley said, “Look daddy, it's a butterfly”(Lawrence). This quote relates to the loss of humanity because the butterfly means something ugly can turn into something beautiful. This relates to the world today because many bad things could happen in life, but eventually that bad thing could turn into the most beautiful thing there
