Lord of the Flies
How does Golding show mankind’s inner evil? Do you agree with his assumption that man is basically evil?
Lord of the Flies is a book written by William Golding, influenced greatly by the events in World War II, when the news of the Holocaust and the concentration camps were materializing. Golding was shaken at the terrible nature of war and what humans can do to one another, not referencing the Holocaust or other wartime crimes, but for humans to be unaware ably evil. The book, Coral island, by Robert Ballantyne in 1857, which was a book about three boys shipwrecked on a pacific island and their victory over their situations, also influenced Golding, and the character names are similar to those in Coral island, Deliberately, as Golding says.
In the dictionary, the definition of Evil is that of morally bad or wrong, Characterised by anger or is malicious, Also one violating or inconsistent with the moral law.
Golding introduces the theme that evil, as a destructive force in man, society and civilisation is present in us all. Golding used the beastie, described by the little uns to represent evil that is part of human nature. After dusk, they describe that the beast lurks in the jungle, hunting and it wishes to overcome them. By day, the ‘beast’ disguises itself as creepers that innocently hang among the canopy of the trees. The vines may represent human nature in the daylight of civilisation, but in the darkness in a new environment, their real predatory nature surfaces. The little’uns scream in terror at the burning creepers during the forest fire “Snakes! Snakes! Look at the Snakes!” this is said to be an allusion to the serpent in the garden of Eden, who stole innocence and brang civilization to its own physicality.
Golding shows man’s inner evil many ways throughout the text, but one of the main ways he expressed this is through characters such as Jack and Roger.
Jacks first appearance was with his choir which was thought to be a dark creature, but it turned out to be a ‘party of boys’ marching in time in two parallel lines and dressed in strange clothing, possibly referencing uniformed military, seen to be evil from the beginning. Jack’s warlike attitude is clear from the start as he volunteers his choir to be hunters and he also carries around a knife.

Through the process of showing how the boys arrive on the island conditioned by society to act civilized and leave the island at the end more savage and more evil, Golding succeeds in trying to depict how man possesses inherent evil. The concept of inner evil in man can be connected to the inner evil in Brutus, from the play Julius Caesar by Shakespeare. While Brutus is a trusted advisor and good friend to Caesar, he still conspires and is involved with the assassination of Caesar. His desire to murder, even as he holds a prominent position among Caesar’s advisors, provides proof of his inherent evil. Golding ultimately seeks to prove in the Lord of the Flies that evil is the prevalent force in man and that it takes precedence over even childhood innocence.
The primary purpose of the video is to inform the viewers about the hardships that the citizens of New Orleans faced after Hurricane Katrina. They tie in the overall difficulty the community faced by primarily focusing on Herbert Gettridge and thus giving the audience to form a connection with him. The main viewership is directed to adults interested in not only Hurricane Katrina but also the follow up storm Rita and the damage done by the two storms. This goes into a more personal account of the Hurricane as told through people that have lived in New Orleans. The video shows the difficulties the citizens faced with rebuilding –not only their homes, but also their lives. Both reflective and informative are descriptions that could be used to describe the tone. The story shows the emotional trauma the citizens go through with the memories they share of the event. Various people throughout the biopic share their personal struggles of dealing with the ruins Katrina left behind, this appeals to the viewers emotions and makes it pathos. In the article, “Katrina Documentary Gives Voice to Survivors,” Dennis O’Neil explains how Spike Lee documents the damage of hurricane Katrina to New Orleans not only structurally, but the emotional hurt as well. The film, ¨When the Levees Broke: A Requiem,¨ is broken into four acts which graphically depict the trauma of hurricane Katrina. O’Neil gives a brief background on Spike Lee and how he made this magnificent production. He talks about the trips to Louisiana, the hundreds of interviews and footage captured of the natural disaster. After the summary of Lee, he goes into detail of the movie which he divides into sections. He speaks of how acts one and two are set up to cover the time period of the first threats of the hurricane to five days after Katrina hit and the damage done during this time. Part of Golding’s intent was to demonstrate that the evil is not recognised in specific populations or situations. On the island the beast is manifest in the deadly tribal dances, war paint and manhunt: in the outside world the same lust for power and control plays out as a nuclear war. Throughout ‘The Lord of the Flies’ Golding has managed to show that evil is present in everyone.

He did so by providing people the opportunity to understand those who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina through their stories and opinions. He appeals to the emotions of the audience by compiling stories, voices, images, and media coverage of the event. The government failed in providing appropriate help to the residents of New Orleans due to their slow reaction. In a number of days after the storm hit, help decided to arrive and many homes and lives already vanished due to the storm and the aftermath. With the use of logical, emotional, and ethical appeals, Lee was able to document a film to make his argument. The style of his argument persuaded Americans into believing that the government did not care about the people of New Orleans.
At first the meetings were the things that brought them together. Meeting had rules and order in them. Jack was the boy that started the unraveling of civility. He wanted to be the chief and ended up being in charge of the hunters. He resented the power that Ralph had. Jack hated Piggy because he was always on Ralph’s side. The rule at meetings was a boy could only speak if he had the conch shell. While Piggy was talking, Jack interrupted him and tried to take away the shell. Ralph yelled out “The rules! You’re breaking the rules!” Jack shouted “Who cares?” Ralph exclaims “Because the rules are the only thing we’ve got!”( pg 91) Ralph was the one who tried to keep everyone together and Jack did every thing to turn the other boys away from Ralph.
Golding was such an excellent writer because even though his plot was incredibly simple it makes us think about the true meaning behind his words. Golding is able to convey vast information in simple ways through characterization such as when we see Jack manipulating the boys through pathos, Ralph establishing himself and relying on his ethos, and Piggy ineffectively attempting to use logos. The devote use of symbolism throughout the novel creates a unique writing style and conveys an elegant tone. Golding’s message is indeed frightening; it tells us that without society’s harsh conditioning we will succumb to savagery and become savages like Roger and Jack. This challenges the idea that some people are born good and it makes us realize that without the constant threat of prison and other forms of conditioning, we would be no better than the so called scum of death row and this idea should terrify the readers down to their very bones.
Golding's stress on the negative results of brutality might be perused as a reasonable support of civilization. In the early parts of the novel, he proposes that one of the paramount capacities of socialized public opinion is to give an outlet to the savage driving forces that dwell inside every person. William Golding, in his fictional novel Lord of the Flies, has created one of the most stunningly elaborate, captivating works of American literature. It is a straightforward story of a few shipwrecked schoolboys that dramatically turns into a multifaceted tale of endless deceit, trickery and all out jealousy. It is in this story that three boys, Ralph, Piggy, and Jack, come to play the pivotal parts of leaders to a group of children who are fighting for the right of survival.
William Golding implies that peoples reasons for evil, regardless of whether they were born with cruelty or their situation brought it out is greatly affected by the way they are treated by parents, social situation, fear, and chaos. Fear can be brought out by not having parents, or having parents treat them badly. The issue at stake is children and their upbringing or current situation, effecting and more so flawing their behavior.
Golding has a rather pessimistic view of humanity having selfishness, impulsiveness and violence within, shown in his dark yet allegorical novel Lord of the Flies. Throughout the novel, the boys show great self-concern, act rashly, and pummel beasts, boys and bacon. The delicate facade of society is easily toppled by man's true beastly nature.
The title of the book is Lord of the flies the author is a British novelist named William Golding a British he wrote the book during WWII. What Golding aimed to do was explore the dark side of humanity and at what point would we look at each other as enemies. The main characters in the book that stood out the most were Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy, Samneric and Rodger. They are the ones who have had the most critical change in the story.
Man’s inhumanity to man literally means human’s cruelty towards other humans. This is a major theme of the story and is seen throughout it. Golding himself even states that “man produces evil as a bee produces honey.” A review of the book states how Golding portrays this “because the boys are suffering from the terrible disease of being human.” Piggy, Ralph, and Simon are the “rational good of mankind” portrayed in the book, and Jack and his hunters are the “evil savagery of mankind.” “The beast” is a symbol for the evil in all humans, and Simon and Piggy, or rationality, are almost helpless in his presence. Simon, though, in a book filled with evil, is a symbol of vision and salvation. He is the one to see the evil as it truly exists, in the hearts of all humanity. When he tries to tell the others of this truth, however, he is killed, much like Christ was trying to bring salvation to the ignorant. Simon being there gives us hope; the truth is available to those who seek it. In the book, Jack and his hunters become so evil that they end up killing two boys while on the island. Man’s tendencies towards evil in The Lord of the Flies are also compared to the book of Genesis in the Bible. Nature, beauty, and childhood can all be corrupted by the darkness within humankind. The ending of this truly dark and evil story tells readers how Golding feels about evil within society and where he thinks humanity is headed. Firstly, let’s look into how my future is present in my past. The most obvious portion of my future that is in my past is my willingness and efforts to love and include everyone and to spread this world view. It took a fellow classmate of mine to demonstrate to my third grade self that we are all human beings and we all deserve to be treated as such.
