Lord of the Flies

Imagine having to be flown away from your home because of a war. That is bad enough. But, then imagine your plane crashing on some deserted island on your way there. The pilot of your plane is dead and your stuck with approximately 20 other young boys like yourself. No adults! What are you going to do? This is the scenario in the movie "Lord of the Flies".

At first all of the little boys come together and work together to figure out what they are going to do and how they are going to handle things. They are civilized little English school boys in the beginning. They go around and find out what everyone's name is. They get together in a meeting and vote a young boy named Ralph as the leader. Ralph is a quiet and well mannered little boy and he looks out for the best of everyone. Ralph believes in decency and civilization. Ralph has a follower nicknamed Piggy. Piggy is an overweight smart little kid. Ralph makes up rules like only one person talking at once and you have to raise your hands. Things like this that keeps order in the group. Piggy always backs Ralph up on his decisions.

Things go well for a while, until they start believing that there is a beast that is on their island and is after them. The civilizations starts to change when Jack, a snotty sarcastic kid, takes a group to hunt for the beast. They start killing pigs and eating the meat. Things start to get out of control and they begin to paint their faces and sharpen spears. So, the group gets divided because more boys start to follow Jack because they have food even though they are crazy. Jack's group accidentally kills Simon, one of the younger boys. Piggy sticks with Ralph the whole time, even when they were the only ones left with some decency. Jack and his friends come and steal Piggy's glasses to start a fire and this makes Ralph mad. Ralph and Piggy go to regain Piggy's glasses and Jack's tribe makes a huge boulder fall on Piggy. They killed him. This leaves Ralph as the last one left. So Jack's tribe hunts him. They chase him all through the jungle and then onto the beach. Ralph stumbles and falls right onto a man with white pants and bright white shoes.

The boys on the island are able to explain that human are evil from the beginning and that they aren’t impacted by society. Jack’s authoritative power forces him to push the rest of the boys out of their comfort zone by making them evil being that was not there true identity before. The power that was developed by Jack impacts everyone and destroys all of the lives that rejected him. Piggy who was the most knowledgeable character and also the weakest character was often disrespected by Jack because he opposed Jack’s power and recognizes that his power not voted for. As as result, Piggy is killed by Jack’s own boys because they too have been impacted by brute force. They killed piggy just like how they hunted pigs.     Lord of the Flies has several themes that are the key to understanding of literature. Three of the themes of this novel are the fear, courage and lastly survival. Fear has been surrounded throughout the entire novel. With the amount of fear because of an apparent beast, many of the people on the island have changed. Most of the boys have become more violent throughout the novel and have no sense of direction as what to do next. Jack was one of those people who had changed majorly throughout the novel. Courage is one of the most important things to have mentally and physically when you’re stuck in an unknown island. Ralph’s courage in the book became strong when he had lost two of his close companions in Simon and Piggy. Survival is the best theme in this novel simply because of the lack of tools and the laziness of the people throughout the book. These themes show how great and wonderful this book is, and if you read it thoroughly, you will understand the perils and the adventure of Ralph, Jack and the rest of the boys in Lord of the Flies.

Conflicts within themselves, with nature and with each other constantly test the children’s ability to endure. Struggles against the natural elements of the island, rival groups or fear of the unknown continually appear throughout the story. Some of the boys on the island did not survive the quarrels that they faced. They perished because they were lacking something that the surviving boys did not. The survivors had a natural primal instinct or a physical or mental advantage over the boys who did not make it. ‘Only the strong survive’ is an important element that runs through the novel Lord of the Flies because in order to survive the boys must turn to their primitive instincts of physical strength and savagery.

    Human nature has been debated for centuries, everyone coming up with their own theories, pulling their sources from religious texts, wars, experiments, or daily life. William Golding and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, born in very different times and countries were very opposite in their views compared to one another. William Golding believed that human nature was immoral and evil, and there has been evidence of this all the way to the beginning of human society. Without laws or moral boundaries, humans would plunder, steal, and murder to their hearts content, delighting in their new found freedom to let go of social philosophies imposed upon them. Rousseau, however, believed that human nature was naturally just and moral, and it was society’s laws that made them immoral. Social norms and laws create limitation and superfluous need, and it is within those boundaries that humans become enslaved to “moral inequality.” Without laws and social norms, humans will revert back to their natural goodness. It is the polar opposite of Golding’s belief. Golding’s philosophy, however, is more in line to my own, as in my opinion, Rousseau’s belief is a rather naïve outlook on life.
