If fear trumps bravery, or rage rules over noble in decisions that cannot be undone can the acts always be redeemed? Can a villain always right his wrongs and become the hero he was meant to be? Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States, who fought for the freedom of the nation, once said, "Those who stand for nothing fall for anything." These powerful words run alongside the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, in which a boy who succumbs to cowardice at a young age must make many great sacrifices later in life in order to redeem himself. The book goes into depth about which is worse, to act in ways that harm others, or to experience something being done to others and not act at all.

Although they live on the same land, play together, and have the same father, they are treated very differently solely based on their appearance. Amir has always seen himself as a coward but when a tormenter, Assef, threatens Hassan and rapes him, Amir finally becomes convicted of being a coward when he does nothing to stop it. ...ooked at his greatest fear in the eye and fought Assef for Sohrab, the agony of his burden vanished; he finally felt liberated and began to laugh, “What was so funny was that, for the first time since the winter of 1975, I felt at peace.” (Hosseini 289) After all this time Amir finally felt like he had what was coming to him and that with Assef’s promise to hurt both Hassan and Amir was fulfilled, Amir felt at peace with the world.
Amir was redeemed. Fear may have won in the beginning but did not persist when he went to Afghanistan showing immense bravery and saving Sohrab. By breaking the chains that started with fear and lead to inaction, Amir finally became the hero he was meant to be, and came to find that he had not been a villain even in the beginning. When one stands up for what is right, despite what may happen to them, they will find amity and deliverance.
