Long term care services are required for people who are suffering from chronic illnesses. These are medical conditions that are persistent and require constant medical attention on a daily basis. These care centers are also for elderly people with a serious disability which makes them rely on others during a particular function.
Long term care centers usually take on the custody of the elderly patients that they receive. They have to then take care of both medical and common needs of the patients that they serve on a constant basis. Medical practitioners are always present at such centers because they usually house patients with serious illnesses.

It is usually selected as the place of residence for senior citizens who do not want to live alone in their homes. As the name suggests, a nursing home has twenty four hours access to trained staff which is able to take care of any patient with a medical condition.
These facilities are often termed as SNF or skilled nursing facilities. They are also named as homes for taking intermediate care. This means that they provide a residence for patients who are fit enough to move out of a hospital but still require consistent support from medical staff and there finding it tough to survive on their own.
A nursing home does not necessarily house only older patients. They may also have younger patients that are suffering from serious medical conditions. The main function of a nursing home is to house all kinds of rehabilitation services. It needs to work as a service center for patients who can then ultimately move out to live on their own.
Different nursing homes are also used for particular needs. The people living in nursing homes can also ask for many legal rights under the state and federal law. There are many cases that usually surface about the medical care provided in nursing
With over 1.5 million elderly and dependent adults now living in nursing homes throughout the country, abuse and neglect has become a widespread problem. Even though some nursing homes provide good care, many are subjecting helpless residents to needless suffering and death. Most residents in nursing homes are dependent on the staff for most or all their needs such as food, water, medicine, toileting, grooming- almost all their daily care. Unfortunately, many residents in nursing homes today are starved, dehydrated, over-medicated, and suffer painful pressure sores. They are often isolated, ignored and deprived of social contact and stimulation. Because of insufficient and poorly trained staff commonly found in nursing homes. Care givers are often overworked and grossly underpaid that often results in rude and abusive behavior to vulnerable residents who beg them for simple needs such as water or to be taken to the bathroom.
Taking care of the individuals that are getting older takes many different needs. Most of these needs cannot be given from the help of a family. This causes the need of having to put your love one into a home and causing for the worry of how they will be treated. It is important for the family and also the soon to be client to feel at home in their new environment. These facilities are regulated by the state and federal government and these regulations protects the senior residents. For example it is mandatory for the facilities in Texas to provide mandatory services such as daily living activities like dressing, feeding or help prepare meals and cleaning. Depending on the facility license the staff would have to assist with financial management and certain medical services. Even though the federal government developed guidelines the state can make their own as long as it complies with the federal government. Some organizations may accept private pay while others accepted Medicaid. Regulations are developed to protect residence that from being in an unsafe environment. As a result some assisted living and nursing homes are unable to continue services by having fines or closing for an unknown amount of time. Since each state has different set of regulations I will focus on the state regulations in Texas because it is the state I reside in. The organization in Texas that regulates assisted living and nursing homes is the Department of Aging and Disability services(DADS).
With people directed care “residents” are in total control of their activities, meaning that they have free will over when they would like to get up, eat, bathe and do any other activities. This principle is important because it fosters autonomy and independence in the resident which is the opposite of what is typical of living in a long-term care facility. The second core principle is the building of meaningful relationships between the staff and the residents. This principle is important because according to studies, staff members tend to work harder, and deliver superior care to their residents when they like and know their patients on a personal level. Also, the residents tend to feel more at ease, and safe knowing that they’re being taken care of by someone who cares.

This in turn set in motion the opening of private homes that allowed people to live in a care facility and collect the OAA payments as well. It was not until the 1950’s when nursing homes started developing into the facilities most of us are familiar with today. It was then that nursing homes were required to follow state set standards for licensing and some even received Federal grants if they possessed a hospital like atmosphere. Throughout history, nursing homes have faced many dilemmas, laws, and legislations. However, it has been these ups and downs that have contributed to the quality of modern nursing homes. In my opinion, nursing homes are a good choice because they provide seniors with companionship, medical treatments, and reliable safe shelter for those who do not have a safe environment at home.
