Loneliness in Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck John Steinbeck wrote “of Mice and Men” in the 1930s. It is set in California and shows us life for migrant workers at this time. The book describes how lonely life can be. In the book there are different kinds of loneliness. The different types described are Isolation which means that you are kept separate from others because you have an illness just like being in quarantine. Solitude is another type of loneliness which means a state of being away from everyone else. Abandonment is a type of loneliness where everyone has left you behind. Then characters that are lonely in the novel “Of Mice and Men” are Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife. Candy is lonely because he is old and Carlson shot his dog. Crooks is Isolated because he is not allowed to talk to anyone because he is black. Curley’s wife is lonely because Curley wouldn’t let her go anywhere and he makes her stay at home all the time. George and Lennie are not lonely because they’ve both got each other. They can talk to each other unlike Candy, Curley’s wife, and Crooks. George doesn’t won’t to leave Lennie because he doesn’t want become lonely. We know this because at the beginning of the novel Lennie says “If you don’ want me I can go off in the hills an’ find a cave.” George says “No-look! I was jus’ foolin’, Lennie. “Cause I won’t you to stay with me.” George also says “guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world.” After that he says “with us it ain’t like that. We’ve got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.” This tells us that George and Lennie need each other and they don’t... ... middle of paper ... ... 5 because she realises that Lennie is alone and she wants company. She also knows that there is nobody around to tell her to go back home. Lennie says “well I ain’t supposed to talk to you or nothing.” Lennie also says “George says you’ll get us in a mess.” This tells us that Lennie is trying to not get in trouble because he is scared he won’t get to tend the rabbits. Curley’s wife starts to talk about her past she says “I met a guy, an he was in the pitchers.” She also says “soon he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write to me about it.” This shows that Curley wasn’t the only one in her life. She says she married Curley because she didn’t want to stay somewhere where she couldn’t make something of herself. Her dream was to be in the movies. We know this because she starts to describe what she could have been doing.
