My view on logic is a way of thinking and a process, like how a computer interprets data imputed, but this may have its downfalls. Logical thinking can open you mind to a world of thoughts you normally would not think of like day dreaming, but if your mind wanders to grim topics, you can discover hidden horrors that you may have not seen. For example, in history you may talk about historic battles and other events in the past like the American Civil War. If you think about the losses over both sides of the war, and it is estimated that almost three fourths of a million people died, and the population before the war in 1860 was around thirty one million. Now that may be a small change but when thirty percent of males in the south and ten percent from the north are now dead or missing in action, that can take a toll on the infrastructure of a society, especially during this time period. With the death total being as high as it was, that’s not including the wounded and amputees, which affected one in thirteen solders that returned from the war unable to fully work to their potential. Appealing to logic is to be able to relate to the thoughts of the audience in other words think the same way as them to then later get them to think the same way as you. King Arthur’s explanation for this was that a swallow brought it back when migrating. The peasant said that is impossible because a little bird cannot carry a coconut while it migrates. Hence with no other possibilities the peasant had concluded that it is impossible to have a coconut in England, which had been brought back, from a tropical area from a small migrating bird. During a time of great tribulations, each colonist would be forced to chose a side. Their options were either to fight for their rights and freedom or stay loyal to the royal monarchy of Britain. Both sides had support from people of great power. Two men by the names of Thomas Paine and James Chalmers wrote to defend their position and influence others to do the same with pamphlets titled Common Sense and Plain Truth, respectively. After reading, re-reading and analyzing both of the documents, it is clear that each hold debatable arguments, however, when pinned against each other and set side by side, Common Sense holds more power and influence, whereas Plain Truth highlights greater intellectual and logical arguments.
Baron’s first example of logical explanation is based on privacy. He states“we’re giving up our privacy in ways that writers never did before” (Baron 714). Baron states this because privacy on the internet is difficult to obtain as websites, businesses and social media are trying to learn more about you. Allied to critical thinking, logic has a place and holds a relationship that reflects the thought process yet; critical thinking has a more diverse standard of questioning relative to developing both intellectual and emotional queries that can better evaluate reason.
Dr. Gerald M. Nosich, an expert in critical thinking, wrote a book titled, “Learning to Think Things Through,” for his readers to understand and enhance their analytical skills. In the book, Nosich discussed the eight elements of reasoning including two additional elements: Purpose, Question at Issue, Assumptions, Implications and Consequences, Information, Concepts, Conclusions/Interpretation, Point of View, and Alternatives and Context (two additional elements). These elements help sort through our reasoning process so that we can make reasonable decisions. Our school has always been a home to different kind of activities for its students. These activities challenge our minds, our talents, our imagination and creativity. This fall our school hosted the "Rowena Ravenclaw's Tests of Logic" activity. It had us waiting for puzzles and hurring for submissions.
