Randy Pausch once said, “We cannot change the cards we are dealt with, just how we play the hand.” The last lecture is a speech that professor write. It is what the last lecture they would say if it was the last lecture they’d make in their life. In The Last Lecture, Pausch explains his childhood dreams and everything he accomplished to make them possible, and how to help other accomplish their dreams. Pausch is an inspiring fighter; he’s considered a fighter for the fact that since he found out he has ten tumors in his liver, yet he still lives his life to the fullest. Pausch has an undergraduate degree in Computer Science in Brown 1982; he earned his PHD in Computer Science in Carnegie Mellon University in 1988, and joined the Carnegie Mellon staff in 1997. Pausch’s last lecture is actually for his family, not his actual audience. He knows he’ll die soon, so his family to read when they’re older.

It’s the triumphs as well as the defeats, that I will remember most about my life when I look back in thirty years. If I can look back and say, “I didn’t think I could ever accomplish this, but I gave it my all.” Pursuing the next challenge along with being a well-rounded, compassionate person will allow me to consider my life a success in thirty years. Nothing in my life emulates this attitude towards what I will consider a success, in terms of pushing my limits, in thirty years, than my current pursuit of collegiate level sports.
The cool breeze stroked my skin as I flew through the cozy clouds. I was flying above rocky mountains, vast oceans, and colossal skyscrapers, but when I opened my eyes, I was in a classroom chained to a sturdy desk, hearing my second grade teacher give a lecture about American history. While humans tend to anticipate for the day their dreams will become their reality, most people will struggle to accept the way their lives are because their most treasured dreams will only be alive in their fantasies.
Dr. Pausch mentions that every individual will show his good side if we wait patiently and that no individual is pure evil. I think this is a something I can truly apply in my life, as I am a person who forms an opinion about someone very quickly and find it very difficult to change that in due course of time. Also the concept of brick walls in life being there to show dedication and make you obstinate is something I will remember in life moving forward. This lecture given by Dr. Pausch truly displays courage, appreciation for life and the very simple concept of ‘work hard and have fun doing it’ which results in a great success. A very tearful watch but delivers a strong life message and caused me to reflect back at my own life and see things in positive light.
Diagnosed with cancer and given just months to live, Randy Pausch decided to give a last lecture. Randy felt this was important so that he may give a sort of goodbye to those who he cared about, share advice and life-experiences that he felt were important, and most importantly for his kids, whom would never really get to know him because of their age. He received his bachelors degree from Brown University, and went on to earn his Ph.D in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University, later becoming a professor there. He had been employed with major companies, such as Adobe Systems and Walt Disney Imagineering. In September 2006, Randy Pausch discovered that he had terminal pancreatic cancer, and was given 3-6 months to live. He underwent a pancreaticoduodenectomy to remove the tumor from his pancreas, but by August 2007 the cancer had returned. Non- philosophers tend to consider it to be life’s greatest question. Philosophers, however, tend to stray from the question, as they believe that it is either not a clear enough question to be answered, or that it simply does not have an answer at all (Seachris). As one ponders on how to live a good life, many ideas come to mind. Whether this may be wealth, family, or beauty, the early philosopher’s theories need to be taken into consideration. Those early philosophers include Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, and The Epicureans. These four committed their lives towards bettering life, and are the basis of most philosophical theories. It is evident that these four need to be read, understood, and discussed to better understand one’s life. They always pondered on the thought of how to have a perfect life and society. When one makes their own theory, based upon these early philosophers, not only do they need to establish a strong belief system, it is required to practice this too. Plato had the most basic of theories, being that only virtue was needed in life to be happy and nothing else. For Aristotle, he used Plato’s foundation and added that external goods, such as wealth, respect, friends, and beauty were all necessary. Without one of these, Aristotle believes that one cannot live a happy life. For the Stoics, they settled on a balanced approached between virtue and external goods, saying that virtue is necessary, yet external goods are preferred too. The Epicureans largely argue the Stoics view, and present that pleasure (tranquility) is the goal of every life, but virtues and friends are required for this. Each theory has many critics, even with Aristotle being a critic of his own theory. None seems perfect, yet all fit today’s modern society. I found that I agree with the Stoics theory the most, and find that any external good is fine as long as virtue is the basis of that person’s life.
Many individuals wonder what is the meaning of life, and if the life that they are living has some sort of meaning to it. Before determining what the meaning of life is one has to know what the meaning of meaning is. Meaning has to do with how a word represents something or communicates something.
