1. I am a nurse manager on 12 beds medical-surgical for the pediatric floor at the Littleton Community Hospital. Our hospital is the biggest community hospital for this small town. I been working here for about 5 years and I noticed there is a problem when it comes to documentation for patients care. We do not have enough computers on our floor due nursing staffs, physicians, as well as CNAs will be occupied for their own patient charting. Due to this problem, patients charting are being delay, interrupt the workflow of all staffs, which causes nursing staffs not being able continue to assist others patient because they are waiting for available computers. To have COWs on the floor, computers, the nursing staffs, physicians, and CNAs are able to chart patient care without waiting for available computers. It will also allow the staffs to do assess the patients and charting while in the patient rooms. This will increased direct communication between the patient and health care providers (Murry & Palmer, n.d). By using COWs, it gives nursing the ability to streamline their workflow, which allows them to have access to the EMR right away without the waiting for a computer to open up at the nurse station (Akridge, 2009). Nurses are able to provide better quality care for the patients with the use of having COWs on the floor. COWs “support a variety of point-of care technologies, such as barcode medication administration technology that can help ensure the right patient gets the right medication at the right time” (Akridge, …show more content…

Our hospital has recently changed over to Epic after using MEDITECH for their EMR charting system. EPIC has become one of the most use electronic health record (EHR) system in the U.S. that support the secure flow of patient data between Epic and other software systems, hardware systems, and peripheral devices (HealthIT, n.d). Since our hospital was using MEDITECH before, our computers system are from Dell product. Epic software can be use with any PC software such as HP, Dell, IBM, ect. However, for the best technologies support, HP products are more compatible Epic. From servers’ support system to storage support, and virtual desktop (VDI) infrastructure, HP products can provides the requirement for Epic system (OST, n.d). To get the best solution for Epic, Intel Xeon and the Linux operating system can provide that. “Linux running on the latest generation of Intel Xeon processor-based servers offers a solution, providing mission-critical capablitites” (Intel, n.d). Based on Epic software, it provides a scalable and highly resilient EMR solution running on affordable Intel Xeon processor-based servers and the Linux system (Intel, n.d). The Open Systems Technologies (OST) did a 3 months test at a 120-bed hospital in Cooperstown, New York with the Epic software. They combined Linux and Intel Xeon processor-based servers, and the result provided the EMR infrastructure need with flawless implementation (Intel, n.d). So with the HP product and the combination of Linux, this
