“…People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of” (23). This quote from the novel The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, serves as motivation for both the main character, Santiago, and the reader to strive for their mission in life regardless of the many adversities that may arise to stop them. Coelho crafts this novel with thematic depth and an innovative style that includes symbolic characters, which undoubtedly culminates in a novel of literary merit. Coelho embeds thematic depth throughout The Alchemist as the story of Santiago progresses. The author recounts a story of a wise man and a boy. This tale may seem to be irrelevant to the story of Santiago, but it portrays profound meaning to the life of the main character. …show more content…

He compares and contrasts these characters to the main character, Santiago, throughout the entirety of the book. The Crystal Merchant is a symbolic character the author chooses to contrast against Santiago. The crystal merchant lives a life deprived of achieving dreams; he has always remained in the same area for business and has no opportunity to change: “the crystal merchant had no choice. He had lived thirty years of his life buying and selling crystal pieces, and now it was too late to do anything else” (45). He had one dream of doing the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca, but he lacked the spirit accomplish this dream. “I just want to dream about Mecca… But I’m afraid that it would all be a disappointment, so I prefer just to dream about it” (55). Then there is Santiago who dreamt of going to the pyramids to fulfil his personal legend; although, there were many ups and downs that came his way. In choosing the crystal merchant’s personality to be this way, Coelho creates a style where he utilizes these two characters to show the reader and Santiago that not pursuing dreams and denying them leads to failure.
