In literature, the faintest of details gives insight to very complex themes, ideas and narrative purposes. Whether it is the environment going along with the story’s tone or completely contrasting it, eyes or body language providing hints as to the true nature of characters’ emotions or intentions, or the tone that the narrator imbues into the story, foreshadowing events to clue readers in on what will happen. These three literary devices help to get the reader to see the author’s point of view on whatever they are trying to convey in their writing. Two stories that follow these three literary devices to help express their various themes, motifs, and symbolism are “To Build a Fire” by Jack London and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’ Connor. In “To Build a Fire”, London uses nature as the tone setter, the environment to follow the tone as well as provide foreshadowing, and the body language to convey emotions of both the unnamed hiker and his dog throughout their trek through the Yukon wilderness. The way he uses these literary devices are used to combine together to tell the reader the insignificance of this hiker’s challenge to nature, the impassivity of nature, and how instinct tells to those who listen to it, how to respect nature. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” the tone of the story is subtly ominous and filled with foreshadowing while the environment is used to provide a direct contrast with the story’s tone to throw the reader off, and the eyes are used to depict how twisted The Misfit has become, but his body language shows that there is at least some part of him that has not been twisted because of the time he spent in prison for a crime that he most likely did not commit. Both stories are unique in their own ... ... middle of paper ... ...unity to describe what the reality of a situation actually is and have a character provide their contrasting view. Body language shows the reality of the characters, rather than the mentality the characters believe they carry. Though body language can also show a better mentality than reality, such as the dog’s instincts and body language discouraging the hiker’s actions every step of the way. Tone provides great foreshadowing, giving both London and Connor a good variable of methods of delivering hints as to where the story was going and adding much of their own unique styles of writing through these different methods. Literary devices are building blocks that are unique for each writer, tailored to each writer 's style and so amazingly fluid that each story introduces new methods of storytelling, culminating in diverse methods of critical thinking and analyzation.
