In Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery”, she tells about an annual lottery drawing which takes place in a small town. This lottery has been around for over seventy years. During the lottery drawing, the head of each family goes and pulls a piece of paper from the black box. Whoever had the piece of paper with the black spot on it had to be stoned to death. Shirley Jackson uses many types of literary devices such as symbolism, conflict, and irony to support her overall purpose of writing this short story.
One of the uses of symbolism is shown when she stated, “[b]obby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example by selecting the smoothest and roundest stones …” (1). The children …show more content…

The two types of conflicts shown. The types shown are man vs. society and man vs. man. When Mrs. Hutchinson shouted,”[y]ou didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It was not fair” (4), she was about to be stoned to death. Mrs. Hutchison felt as if she was overpowered by the outcome of the drawing. During the first drawing when her family name was picked, she found it to be unfair because the whole thing seemed to be arranged. Even though she took up for her husband, it seemed as if he had betrayed her by not speaking up before she was killed. She screamed,” [i]t is not fair, it is not right” (5). Old Man Warner was an elderly man stuck in traditional ways. When they talked about giving up the lottery he snorted, “[p]ack of crazy fools” (3). He lived through seventy-seven lotteries and did not see the need to let it go. He felt as if the tradition had been here this long, there is no reason to part from it now.
Another literary device used in “The Lottery” (1), is irony. The title itself is ironic because it gave people false hope. One would think that the name drawn would be winning instead of losing their life. Jackson stated in the first sentence “[t]he morning of June 27th was a clear
