Literacy is the ability to read and write, but when I break down and define what the word means to me, it also means being able to understand, comprehend, and communicate with others. Of course when I was younger I had no clue how to read or write. There are a select few things that I remember about reading and writing growing up. One of my earliest experiences with literature growing up, was having my mother read to me every night before I went to bed. Although I don’t remember what books she read to me, I remember the books having pictures and she would show them to me so I can see for myself what was going on.

When I had my English classes they were tough at first, I didn’t like when teachers gave the class a specific book to read, I didn’t like when we had to write about what we read. In my mind I felt like teachers were giving me too much to do, or I just didn’t have the patience to sit down and read a book for hours, and one with no pictures at that. After a while, I started to look at things different. For one it was only to benefit me and two reading and writing is something that I would have to do every day. When I look at my surroundings I see words and letters everywhere I go, there is not a day that goes by that I don’t read something whether it be a sign, a poster, a book or something online. I often wonder what life would be like without reading, we would all be very confused and uneducated and half the time we wouldn’t understand what is going on. We wouldn’t be able to communicate with each other, and having an English class would be useless.
