Lipstick, the beauty product that has been used since the middle ages (Brown). Lipstick has gone through many changes during its years. Every girl knows of this beauty product because it has grown to be more popular since it was first sold. Lipstick will never be the same as it used to be because of all of the transformations, new ingredients, and changes in the formula (Brown). Maybe that is a good thing.
Starting with the early years of lipstick, royalty wore it as a sign of hierarchy, while the middle class was never seen wearing it (Brown). Lipstick was different however, it was only made of natural ingredients (Brown). That was not necessarily a good thing. Lipstick did not stay on for too long, and more and more people tried to come up with a lipstick that lasted longer (Edmonds). Hazel Bishop was the first woman to successfully create a 12-hour lipstick (Edmonds). Bishop did this with the help of Bromo acid (Edmonds). This pigment stained lips so there was no need to worry about the product fading away and coming off (Edmonds). The negative about this lipstick is that it dries out lips (Edmonds). This happened because there were not enough oils in the lipstick formula (Edmonds). The recipe would not work if there were too many oils because the product had to have more pigment (Edmonds). Closer to the 20th century the urge to make a better long-lasting lipstick was thriving. Companies of lipstick brands went through many different ingredients and series of tests to find the perfect lipstick (Edmonds). Most tests were used to imitate daily life. Some examples included eating, drinking, kissing, and even playing sports (Edmonds). Playing sports increases sweat around the face including near the upper lip. It has an influence on lipstick durability
