To be the Person of the Year, my group decided that our candidate must be dedicated, hardworking and have excellent leadership skills. We also came to a conclusion that they must have an impact in the community in some way. This special person must also be passionate about what they do. As we examined each of our contenders for Person of the Year, we decided that Lindsey Arthur fulfilled these qualities more than any other candidate. Lindsey Arthur is dedicated to her job, she is hardworking, and she is passionate about what she does. Lindsey has a positive impact in her community every day. Lindsey Arthur grew up in Coldwater, Michigan. While going to college at Taylor University, Lindsey learned a lot about different populations that were in need of help. While in college she Everyday Lindsey plants homes to help underprivileged families all across Delaware County. “Each and every family, that Habitat serves, I believe we have a really deep personal connection with,” Lindsey stated. Habitat For Humanity not only works alongside the family but, Lindsey really gets to know that individual family. In hope to understand the families even more, Lindsey and her co-workers get together with each of the families and spends a great deal of time with them. To try to know the families even better, Lindsey has meetings and spends a great deal of time with each family. During this time Lindsey gets to know the family’s circumstances and builds a deep personal connection with them. Lindsey opens her generous heart and makes the family feel loved and special. Whatever the family is in need of, Lindsey always finds a way to satisfy those needs. With this being said, every family is impacted by Lindsey, and enjoys a better life than before. Lisa Hooker Campbell is an active volunteer in the Nashville area. She has served on numerous boards and chaired several of Nashville's most prominent philanthropic events.
Here it is seen that McClung is developing and proceeding in her fight to provide equality among the sexes, by allowing girls to participate in sporting games. She was providing her female students with the privileges they rightfully deserve. Furthermore, she again went against the norms of a woman in the nineteenth century by simply being a teacher. All of which making Nellie McClung an example of a strong, feminist activist for other women of her era to follow She successfully taught at Hazel school for seven years. It was also at Hazel school that Nellie met the woman who would make the largest impact on her life, Annie McClung.
People who are different and ready for a change can be scary,society is one of the first people scared. Society pushes away people who are different from the norms. This happened in a time overlooked by many people. This was the time the young lords spent in New york. Kids and teenagers banded together to make as much as a difference as possible. Many tried to make a non-violent movement and were still shot down and told to silence their movement. Many middle aged Puerto Ricans raised in the United States disagreed with the action plan of the Young Lords,they believed the young lords were just causing trouble in each city they arrived in. They refuse to allow the idea of change into their mind as well as the minds of their children. They didn’t want the fight to make things worse for Puerto Rico’s freedom.
I believe that I am the best choice for the AVID Standout Award because I am a hard worker, a leader, and I give back to the community. I have always been a student that doesn't give up when they are struggling and wants to keep learning. I personally believe that a good education is the first priority of any human being because education has brought us where we are today in the world.
Brenda Garcia is a 19-year-old Mexican-American, born in the United States but raised in Chihuahua, Mexico. She had been living Chihuahua, Chihuahua Mexico for all of her life with the exception of staying summers trips to the US and to see family members that reside in the States but for the most part Brenda lived in what is considered the main city of Chihuahua, as her family owns a small business. She attended all of grade school in Mexico and lived a normal life until the cartel violence became too prevalent in 2013-2014. Brenda then decided to move to the States in 2014 as a full time student in Colorado State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in social work and a minor in business. She’s has since been living on campus getting accustomed to living in a different environment both socially and economically.
The Atypical Woman in a Typical World Do many people know who Anne Spencer is? Probably not. Anne Spencer was a Harlem Renaissance poet who actually lived in Lynchburg, Virginia. She immensely enjoyed working in her garden and spending time in Edankraal, a small cottage in her garden where she wrote most of her poetry. In Native Son by Richard Wright, Mr. Wright lived in the 1930s and experienced how African Americans were unfairly treated and the extreme poverty that still happens in South Side Chicago. The way Mr. Wright grew up into all the poverty, violence, and being discriminated against placed himself into Bigger Thomas shoes and how handled everything the way he was living with despair. That’s how Mr. Wright sets a psychoanalytic theory in his writing of how he portrays Bigger Thomas, he is self-conscious of his actions and how he wishes to hurt some but doesn’t believe he can bring himself to do that. Bigger Thomas despises the way he lives and how the white people have control over his life but sooner or later he does something that makes him feel superior and equal to a white person.
