Success Story
Everyone knows that Doe Deere is a real success story. The entrepreneur was born in Russia. She grew up in New York City. She always had a fascination for colors and makeup. Doe Deere always believed that makeup was meant to do more than merely enhance your looks. She believed that makeup should express your own uniqueness and creativity. In addition, she believes that you should forget about following rules. Break the rules and create your own individual look. For example, today you might want to mix hot pink lips with flaming purple eye shadow. Tomorrow bold red lips and crimson eyeshadow. This philosophy led to her developing her own line of makeup back in 2008.

John Deere was born in Vermont in 1804. His father went to England to find a job in 1808 and never came back, so he was primarily raised by his mother with his three brothers and his one sister. He was an educated man, and had always been fascinated with blacksmithing. At the age of 17, Deere got his first apprenticeship as a blacksmith in Middlebury. He was so talented, that with just a three year apprenticeship he was able to gain so much knowledge and start his own blacksmith company in 1825. Blacksmithing in Vermont wasn’t as substantial as in the West because the soil wasn’t as hard, so when Deere’s business wasn’t flourishing he packed up and moved to the West.
Deere & Company (Deere) has been experiencing a decrease in its profit margins for one of its aftermarket resale products, specifically the gatherer chain, over the past couple of years. Currently, the cost-price ratio is at 80% compared to last year’s 50%. The purchase cost for the gatherer chain has been steadily increasing, while the aftermarket price has been decreasing. Deere has been budgeting its price to match that of a major competitor, which has been causing the decrease. The company’s main supplier of its gatherer chain is Saunders Manufacturing, with which Deere has established a long term relationship. The owner of Saunders has a reputation of being a tough negotiator, and is someone who is known for not willing to share financial information about the company. However, the U.S. Department of Commerce has provided financial estimates in Saunders’ industry as follows: material spend, 42%; direct labor, 16%; indirect labor, 6%; Overhead, 20%. These percentages are helpful to Deere because they can be used in the negotiation process with Sanders. Since Sanders will not share any specific cost information, Deere is able to use these estimates as a way to justify Sanders reducing its prices. Using these estimates during the negotiations might also incentivize Sanders to provide accurate numbers for its specific manufacturing costs.
John Deere Component Works (JDCW), subdivision of John Deere and Co. was in charged specifically of the manufacturing of tractor component parts. The demand for JDCW’s products had problems due to the collapse of farmland value and commodity prices. Numerous and constant failures in JDCW’s competition for bids, alerted top management to start questioning their current costing methods. As an outcome, the analysis has to be guided to research on the current costing methods with the intention of establishing legitimacy and to help the company in adopting a more appropriate costing system.
“Ask why.” This was the slogan for the company Enron—a company riddled with corporate crime. The documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room describes the corrupt practices of this once seventh-largest company in the United States. Examining this film allowed me to “ask why” this company engaged in these criminal practices, and why corporate crime exists, in general. Currently, there is no real theory attempting to explain white collar crime, so instead, in this essay I will be looking at 5 different factors that I believe are helpful for understanding corporate crime including: corporate culture, the drive for profit, the structure of organizations, socialization and learning, as well as a motivated and persuasive leader.
Lewis Latimer and John Deere were both very determined men living through a hardship. John Deere was a blacksmith who invented the steel plow, to help the people of Illinois cultivate the soil. Lewis Latimer served in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, and in the end, improved the lightbulb more than Edison did. Their roads to success were similar, yet still different.
Imagine for one second that you have an idea, invention, or business plan that you believe could change the world forever. That’s the dream every entrepreneur has, to have an invention or a business that will be successful and change the world. In 1836, a young blacksmith by the name of John Deere, moved to Grand Detour, Illinois from Vermont seeking a new start. In Grand Detour, farmers were having difficulty with the hard, sticky soil sticking to the plow. Deere, being a blacksmith, believed that a plow that was polished and properly shaped could rid the soil by itself. In 1837, that idea became reality, Deere produced the broken saw blade steel plow. The plow caught on quickly and in 1841 the production of the plow was up to a mere 100. Two years later, he moved the company to Moline, Illinois where coal, water power, and cheaper transportation were all readily available. In 1850, roughly 1600 plows were produced, along with other pieces of equipment to go with the plow; starting the world renowned company, Deere & Company or more commonly known as, John Deere. Every entrepreneur has a dream for a life changing invention or a business opportunity that will change the world, John Deere happened to invent the steel plow at the right time to help America expand and develop and while leaving a company with a legacy that has continued to last for more than 176 years.
In recent years many manufacturing companies have exceeded the technology for residential, agriculture, construction, landscaping, forestry and engines, yet John Deere is still one of the best products that people use everyday. Questions come up whether the company’s products are proven, simple, more efficient, and integrated machines that are capable of developing engines. Some of the merchandises are strong-featured to survive the extreme vibration, temperatures, and duty cycles found in off-highway conditions. This paper will demonstrate Economic Environment, Socio-cultural Environment, Global Environment, Competitive Environment, Governmental Environment, and Technological Environment of John Deere Corporation (Leslie, 2014).
In recent years people in America have become curious about white-collar criminals and white-collar crimes. Notorious instances of white-collar cases have peaked interest in the subject as well. The idea of white-collar developed in criminological changed over time. A type of white-collar crime called corporate crime has been found in the United States for years. The government has created systems where they can control white-collar and corporate crime. There are reforms that could effectively address white-collar crimes. Organized crime is usually merged with the Mafia, and other illegal groups, when heard by Americans. Organized crime and white-collar crime differ in the way they are committed and the people who commit these crimes.

The foundation of our country, the keystone to our democratic system, is the integrity of social institutions that we not only assume we can trust but have come to rely on for most aspects in our daily lives. The integrity of these social institutions can only be achieved through building blocks such as internal controls and independent, verifiable information. White collar criminals build a sense of false integrity around them in order to gain the trust of their victims, ranging from the young to the very old. Friedrich’s (2010) Trusted Criminals defines the foundation to white collar crime, the level of trust we have for those in power. We trust those in charge, those with power, and those who represent the integrity of our social institutions.
The evolution of make-up has quite the turbulent ride, beginning approximately six-thousand years as means of protection and to aid health and has now evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry. During its evolution, make-up has been declared illegal, immoral and in some instances was deadly. Today, makeup comes in thousands upon thousands of colors, textures and is even specific to skin type and race.
Zero in on a 45 year-old mother of 13. A man comes to her with a proposal. Invest in his company, and he can guarantee 100%, 200%, possibly even 300% returns on what she gives in mere months. For her this means taking out a second mortgage on her house; the same house she hopes to pay off entirely with the promised large return on her investment. Two years later, the windows of the house are boarded up and the woman recounts to reporters the chilling details behind the reason her family has no place to spend Thanksgiving this year. Her money is gone, along with her hopes of ever retiring from the two jobs she works. Stories like this are heard all too often from victims of white-collar crime. “Lying, cheating, and stealing. That’s white-collar crime in a nutshell. The term- reportedly coined in 1939- is now synonymous with the full range of frauds committed by business and government professionals” (FBI, n.d.). White-collar criminals are not holding a gun to anyone’s back demanding wallets and valuables. Instead, they gain the trust of those they prey on. Worse, they use their status in society to build comfort in their victims’ minds. A few of the best-known schemes in U.S. history are Enron, WorldCom, and the massive Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme. These three cases alone amount to losses upwards of 70 billion dollars. The victims in each case are the same, American citizens. White-collar crime in America is insufficiently controlled due to weak laws, a broad pool of victims, and the enormous power scale of those involved.
Women leaders have the crucial soft skills of empathy, innovation, facilitation, and active listening (Masaoka, 2006). They also have first-hand life experiences that bring technical skills and experiences from the street level to the workplace (Masoka, 2006). Women often build stronger relationships with clients and outside contacts than their male counterparts. This relationship building skill, provides a key aspect which helps to move businesses forward (Giber et al., 2009). Fortune 500 companies with a high percentage of women significantly outperformed those with fewer women. Companies with the highest representation of women showed higher returns on equity than those with fewer women employees (Giber et al., 2009). Thus, future organizations may have a higher percentage of female leaders than we have experienced in the past. Future leaders must ensure that there is equality among the workforce and that women are accurately represented among the
