I’ve been reading Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly. For our first book meeting I was absent, but our group decided on reading through Chapter 4, which was about 64 pages. The book follows three main characters; Herta, a German doctor; Caroline, an ex-Broadway actress; and Kasia, a Catholic teenager living in Poland. Each chapter switches the perspective to one of these characters and tells part of their story. The structure of this book really helps me keep reading because every chapter is different. If you are bored with the chapter you are on, you know the next chapter will be breath of fresh air. It’s hard to fully capture the personality from only one or two chapters, but I’m not in love with all of the characters. Caroline, who works as
In numerous way a character in an book can be affected or influenced by their culture in the novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand a young man by the name of Louie Zamperini is affected at an early age by his culture. While reading the novel an individual would find out that Louie is the son of two Italian immigrants, few years after Louie was born he moves to this small surber city called Torrance with his family. While living in this town Louie family has to fight against prejudices of the citizen not wanting this Italian family living in the neighborhood. In the first few chapter someone would learn that in the 1920s Torrance ,California was very prejudices to the Zamperini family by trying to get the city council members from letting them move into the city.Meanwhile, Louie Italian heritage did have a small effect on him as he was becoming an adult.
The Scarlet Letter, and Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, the difficulties and trials that we all must face can transform the mundane liquid mixture of existence into a vibrant and fulfilling gumbo. The protagonists of these works are two strong-willed and highly admirable women, who prevail in the face of overwhelming odds stacked in everyone’s favor but theirs. In their trying periods of isolation brought about by cold and unwelcoming peers, particularly men, they give their lives meaning by simply pushing forward, and living to tell the tale. Beginning with the very first words of The Scarlet Letter, the reader is thrust into a bleak and unforgiving setting.
“The Heidi Chronicles” by Wendy Wasserstein kept my interest so much that I could not put it down until I was to the last page. I liked how the issue of sexuality played a role along with the issue of feminist goals in this play. I believe they complimented one another in that both groups strive for equal right among the majority. For example when Peter starts to march with the other women from the Art Institute. It shows that he is standing for a cause the effects another minority group in our society: women.
The short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaide sends a strong message about how identity should not be prioritized over other people's views on you. The female authority figure in the story tells the girl how to act in front of men that do not know her so that they will not recognize the slut she has been “warned against becoming” immediately. Identity is the thing that makes up a person. Identity is the traits and qualities that make people unique and different from others. Since the girl is being told a specific way she must act to be accepted by people that do not know her, that limits the room for her to express herself. If the girl is unable to express herself, she is unable to show her true identity. The female authority figure is sending
Cedric highschool fail to provide him with an excellent education in many ways. Cedric is a student at Ballou high school in the Southeast of neighborhood of washington D.C. According to “A Hope In The Unseen” Cedric strives for high grades and hope to attend a top university. At Ballou Cedric has almost no friends. As he gets on through school and throughout the day he ask for more and more work to keep himself busy. Also more known as being on top of things that are important to him. According to chapter one it states that “ Cedric like some other math and science applied to the program and arrived a year early to Ballou”. This quote show that he really wanted to get accepted and it shows how much he is into school.

In this week’s reading the book had a couple key points throughout the section. This was about the birth of the DREAMers and how they were taking a stand against other political groups. It talks about how youth come out of their shells creating a social movement for a different path of American citizenship. It discusses the “good” immigrant verses the “bad” immigrant.
Introduction: Mary Roach introduces herself ass a person who has her own perspective of death about cadavers. She explains the benefits of cadavers and why they could be used for scientific improvements. She acknowledges the negative perspectives of this ideology.
Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone is a historical novel that focuses on the uphill battle to build the first permanent English colony known as Jamestown. In order to survive the colonists had to find a way to trade with the Indians for recourses and battle against the common enemy, called death. Having a healthy, functioning society was by far the hardest thing to maintain.
The three sources I have selected are all based on females. They are all of change and transformation. Two of my selections, "The Friday Everything Changed" by Anne Hart, and "Women and World War II " By Dr. Sharon, are about women’s rites of passage. The third choice, "The sun is Burning Gases (Loss of a Good Friend)" by Cathleen McFarland is about a girl growing up.
Grace King's The Little Convent Girl is an excellent example of post-Civil War realism incorporating a trick-ending. In this local color short story, King methodically lures the reader into a false belief that her story is about an insignificant and nameless young girl who, after twelve years seclusion in a convent, is exposed to the fervor and excitement of a steamboat trip down the Mississippi River. The success of Ms. King's trick-ending is achieved through three basic elements; 1) de-emphasizing the importance of the main character, 2) tidbits of information followed by wordy misdirection, and 3) a false climax.

Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning and also the basis of education. Curiosity had killed the cat indeed, however the cat died nobly. Lives of Girls and Women is a novel written by Nobel Prize Literature winner, Alice Munro. This novel is about a young girl, Del Jordan, who lives on Flats Road, Ontario. The novel is divided into eight chapters; and each chapter refers to a new, unique event in Del's life. As an overall analysis of the book reveals that Del Jordan's intriguing curiosity has helped her throughout her life, and enabled her to gain further knowledge The character is often seen in scenarios where her attention is captivated, and through the process of learning she acquires information in order to her answers her questions about particular subjects. There are many examples in the book that discuss Del’s life, and how she managed to gain information, as well as learn different methods of learning along the way.
