The authors use paradox and irony to show what has happened and to add what you might call… more “flavor” to the story. Using these things (paradox and irony) gave more interesting things for the reader and it somewhat funny. But the difference is that the author of The Open window wanted to have the irony be towards a woman who had lost some of her family and her dog when the author of Like the Sun gave the irony to telling the truth and getting somewhat punished for saying it. Then the idea for the paradox use in the two different stories were different ways. These two stories, although written by two different authors present similarities in the characteristics of the main character. Sammy and Tommy are presented with adversity they had previously never faced. Sammy has to decide should he stand up for the girls by quitting and be the hero or should he mind his own business and keep his job. Sammy is forced to quickly make a decision which his boss Lengel feels he made to rashly. “’I don’t think you know what you’re saying,’ Lengel said” (Updike, pg. 146). For Sammy his decision is what he feels he needs to do and he never regrets his choice. Tommy is faced with adversity of a different kind, he has to decide should he believe the teacher and listen to what she is saying or should he, like the other children, think she is strange and a liar. When she loses her job Tommy is forced to make a decision, confront the child who got her fired, or stay quiet and let the matter slide as it is not his problem. When an individual has to do a compare and contrast for a short story in the realm of literature, I believe that you have to take into account the deeper meaning in a short story. You have to read between the lines, one has to know what the symbols and what metaphors are. “A symbol is something that has a literal identity, but also stands for something else—something abstract—like an idea, a belief, or an emotion. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made between one object and another that is different from it.” (Clugston, 2014) The reader needs to know that the author is using figurative language in the short story. Once the individual can understand this, the literature work will be significantly easier to do a compare and contrast essay.
The story “Cathedral” only took place in a family house with only the husband, wife who can be qualified as a static character tried to kill herself in the past, and finally the blind man. Unlike in the short story “A&P” the event took place in a grocery store with Sammy, the three girls and finally the manager who is also a static character, nothing special with him, just the typical manager the “man”. The short story “Cathedral” is protagonist is a married man who have difficulties making connections with people and even his wife, and he seems to have problems maybe a little jealous of the connection his wife is able to make with other people. “A&P” is protagonist is Sammy, an eighteen years old boy who works in a grocery store, and he hates his job. In the stories “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner, and “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, talk about how two women are experiencing the same emotional situations they have to endure. Both of these stories express the emotional and physical trials the characters have to endure on an everyday basis. In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” it shows a woman who is oppressed and is suffering from depression and loneliness. In “A Rose for Emily” it is showing the struggle of maintaining a tradition and struggling with depression. Both of the stories resemble uncontrollable changes and the struggles of acceptance the characters face during those changes.

It is thought that Meno's paradox is of critical importance both within Plato's thought and within the whole history of ideas. It's major importance is that for the first time on record, the possibility of achieving knowledge from the mind's own resources rather than from experience is articulated, demonstrated and seen as raising important philosophical questions.
For instance, In the “The Possibility of Evil,” the opening scene is described as both positive and pleasant as “The sun was shining, the air was fresh.” (“Possibility” 1). This is ironic because it sets up the story to convey a peaceful and serene mood, when in reality, the story will turn out to display a much darker mood. And similarly to “The Possibility of Evil,” “The Lottery” begins by describing its setting in a seemingly normal and sweet town. “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green” (“Lottery” 1). This idyllic image is covering the darkness that lurks in town. Just like “The Possibility of Evil,” “The Lottery” lulls the reader into a false sense of security and peace by giving off the appearance of the setting to be a completely normal town. While reading different stories, you can find many similarities between the texts. For example, Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe are two stories that have many similarities. Throughout the story, the characters have many of the same traits. Similar events take place in the two stories. All these events lead both stories to a tragic ending. Stories can be similar in many ways. The characters, the setting, and the story line itself. Stories can also be very different. One may talk about an event that will break your heart, while another might bring a smile to your face. The two stories The Man to Send Rain Clouds and Old Man at the Temple have many similarities and differences in their settings due to the place, time, and culture.
Irony – The is situational irony in that Julian acts the way he does to spite his mother and he is glad to see her get “taught a lesson,” but actually this is what kills her.
There are so many examples of situational irony that is clear throughout these stories Mr. Mallard being dead, Mama finally realizes that Maggie deserves the quilts because she understands her heritage better than Dee, Mathilde finding out she worked her whole life for nothing, and when Mr. Graves tells Tessie that Eva draws with her husband's family, Tessie is angry. Dramatic irony is everywhere as well. Louise dies from the shock of seeing her husband who is supposed to be dead and when Dee never wanted anything to do with her heritage until somebody was impressed by it.
In order to give the story a deeper meaning, the author used symbolism to represent ideas and feelings outside of the main character’s self. Several examples of symbolism were displayed in the story, the most prominent being the open window. Mrs. Mallard, the main character, peered through the newly opened window with newborn eyes and gazed upon the new opportunities and prospects that life now offered her. She observed leaves quivering with spring life, street venders selling their merchandise, and clear skies that belonged to a glorious day. These aspects symbolize the glimpse into freedom, happiness, and opportunities now available to her because of her husband’s recent death. The open window is but one element in the story through which the author uses symbolism.
The two texts convey the theme of freedom over confinement by the use of symbols. In The Story of an Hour, after Mrs. Mallard rushes to her room she sits down in a comfortable chair and “She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were aquiver with new spring and life.” The open window symbolizes freedom and opportunities that await her now that her husband is gone. Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something the characters do not. Again we see this type of irony when the family is sitting around the fire talking about their futures. At this point in the story the reader has problem figured out that the family will not make it. This makes the family, particularly the children talking about their future goals ironic as they will not have any future. The changes in “fate” also show dramatic irony. If the guest had gone faster on his journey then he would not have stopped at the families home, and he would have lived. All three types of irony are used throughout the two works. Crime and Punishment and A Doll's House would be incomplete without irony. Irony plays an important role in any type of literature. Irony is used to help show the opposite of what is actually said and/or done. I think that without irony there would be no literature. I think that literature would be boring and plain if there was no irony to add to its originality and
