DISCUSSION:
In the efforts to decrease obesity in our community and gain a larger return in investment, it would be beneficial to implement a few weight loss programs. Studies show that the implementation of weight loss programs can save Medicare approximately $1.8-$2.3 billion over the next ten years (Thorpe & Yang, 2011). There are many ways to approach this matter, but to name a few effective programs; there are lifestyle intervention precedents, physician-led, multidisciplinary, clinical, weight management programs, and weight-loss medications. A lifestyle intervention would modify the way individuals proceed with their day-to-day lives – they would incorporate time for exercise, a healthy diet and a form of counseling that is specific to their needs such as stress management, smoking or drinking abeyance. Obesity remains an extremely serious issue worldwide. Once considered a problem for wealthier counties, overweight and obesity are now dramatically increasing in low and middle income countries (WHO, 2011). In American, the rates of obesity continue to soar. CDC (2009) recognizes obesity as a risk factor for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health problems. According to NHANES over two-thirds of the US are overweight or obese, and over one-third are obese (CDC, 2009). Treatment for this illness varies; it may include the incorporation of diet, exercise, behavior modification, medication, and surgery. Since there is no single cause of all overweight and obesity, there is no single way to prevent or treat overweight and obesity that will help everyone (CDC, 2009).
There are a substantial number of policies in place in hopes to reduce obesity rates as well as encourage active living. However, there seems to be a large gap between why the policies are implemented in hopes to achieve a set outcome, and the knowledge of appropriate and effective steps to go about producing the desired change. The preventive obesity initiative pilot program will be evaluated monthly for its results of approval of the program with feedback from surveys from community members on their progress in weight management through educational workshops of obesity, healthy diets, increased physical activity, and availability of affordable foods.
