The 1920s were a time of political and social changes. Americans began transferring from farm life to city living and the economy kept growing. People all over the country were doing the same dances, listening to the same music, bought the same items and even talked the same. Although the 20’s brought much conflict, for some young people and cities, they were definitely roaring. The 1920’s were very eventful. In 1920, women won the right to vote and the first commercial radio broadcast was made. In 1921, World War I officially ended. In 1922, filmmakers began their own organization to censor their own movies and in 1923, a popular jazz singer, Bessie Smith, recorded her first album. Also in 1923, the 29th president, Warren G. Upper class gentlemen dressed in the finest suits with business shoes and some wore hats and carried canes. Middle class businessmen wore similar but less expensive suits, a sturdy pair of oxfords shoes and a clean felt hat finished off the look. Working class men dressed in laborers clothes that consisted of sturdy, denim overalls, a plain wool work shirt and tough leather boots. Outside of work, men generally wore casual sporting clothes. When attending a formal event, men would wear a tuxedo, leather shoes and a top hat. An interesting thing about the 1920’s was that when women began straying from the older generation’s styles and attitude, they become very interested in nudism, sex and petting parties. They also established modern day dating after they decided that they did not like the idea of courting anymore. Also, instead of trying to look older than they really were, women tried their best to look younger and prepubescent using dresses that did not show off curves and were practically completely straight. From the 1920’s fashion, I see many influences of this time period in the modern day world. For example, the short haircuts are slightly popular among teenagers. Many modern women’s dress styles also take after influences from this time period. For men, nothing had changed among them in the business world.
