If you have been searching the internet for something, you will usually end up with a life coach site popping up in your results at some point. Life Coaching has evolved over the years and continues to change and grow - but what is life coaching, how do you choose a life coach, and what should you be aware of?
Life Coaching Past:
Life Coaching really emerged, noticeably, about 10 years ago. Most life coaching was advertised as Executive Coaching or Leadership Coaching and they were usually hired by corporations for staff or individual training. With the onset of in-house corporate training teams, the need for Executive Coaches diminished and many sought other areas to continue coaching in. Since then, there are now life coaches that coach

There are many life coaches though who still would be considered general life coaches and offer a much broader range of coaching services. The market is pushing life coaches to have specific niche 's quite hard and explain that the public prefers 'specialists ' and are willing to pay more for them. It is rather like the medical profession, you have generalists, generalists with a smaller focus, specialists with a broad focus and specialists with very specific focus topics. So, everyone entering coaching is told to have a niche; it could be life coaching, client attraction, marketing, public relations, Christian, organization, health, financial and many, many more areas that 'coaching ' is being offered …show more content…
Where is Life Coaching going in the future? While the economy and the increasing stress of everyday life is severely hurting the quality of people 's lives, life coaching will continue to grow in the number of people it serves as well as the number of life coaches entering the field. The number of people utilizing the web and becoming web based businesses will continue to increase the number of coaches who provide marketing, client attraction and who start business types of services.
One of the newer life coaching waves coming is 'Wellness Coaching ' which is similar to health coaching. Of concern to me is that many, who are entering this 'niche ', receive only 20 hrs of training. Many life coaches practicing health or wellness coaching have not checked their state 's laws on what they can and cannot coach on in this 'niche '. A life coach cannot treat, diagnose, cure, prescribe or provide counseling. As a Holistic Practitioner, Certified Life Coach and Licensed Social Worker, I fear for people receiving life coaching services on health related subjects from life coaches with so little background in health and thus the potential for harm of the customer may occur. This is my concern and opinion which is shared by some and not by others. The pressure for more specific specialization, 'niching ', will likely increase as
Being a volunteer can be a big commitment and just being “well-meaning” (Page 2) is not enough, there also needs to be support and genuine caring. When thinking about coaches we may only think of them as a coach and nothing else, thus letting many people overlook the possible stressors in their lives like family, workload, financial problems, and general stress. Students are at a point in time where endless knowledge is at their finger-tips as a result of the internet, and therefor the teacher or coach is not the “Gatekeeper and judicious disseminator of knowledge” (Chapter 12) as Carol Wilson said in “Performance Coaching: a complete guide to best practice coaching and training” this change creates a power dynamic shift where the coach may just be facilitating learning. Since the coach and their team are both able to access the same level of knowledge the coach could feel power hungry and their frustrations may be reflected in their methods of coaching. Carol Wilsons focused on the topic of being “Emotionally intelligent” and how it can “empower students, relieve tension, and reduce conflict” which can then Bring the focus back to what is most important, education. The one thing that the internet fails to show us is how to be naturally, emotionally intelligent and is better done by someone like a coach who can tailor their explanation to help their team fully understand. Stress can result in changes in our behaviour and can “range from aggression to social withdrawal” (Chapter 2) explained Doug Strcharczyck and Peter Clough the authors of “Developing Mental toughness: Coaching strategies to improve performance, resilience, and well-being,” which supports the idea that the stressors in a coaches life can result in aggressive coaching techniques. What direction this new step in life will take is unclear at the moment. Kathy would like to join the executive coaching team of Edward Jones to finish out her working years and gain experience in coaching her peers. She laughs as she says, “This scares me to death. I will have to get a Series 7 and a Series 66 Brokers License to serve as a coach to peers. I started out just wanting to complete my degree now I can’t seem to stop!”
Both must provide valid information about strokes, along with assistance and support. These are both critical during the early stages of the recovery process. Where the differences begin are the focuses. With coaching, the focus is on the “what is next?” aspect, whereas counseling is geared towards the “why?” aspect. Coaching is also more activity orientated, meaning the client is encouraged to choose his or her own goal and how he or she obtains said goal. The clinician acts as a mere enabler, guiding the client to where he or she wants to go. The foundation of coaching is based upon the fact that it is the client who holds the key to his or her own success. With this being known, it is impertinent that the clinician abandons the “boss” tendencies to allow the client to “take
If you choose to focus your coaching on a specific area - lets say 'parenting troubled teens ', then its a good idea that you 've got a background of working with troubled teens so that you can best understand your client. Now a pure life coach is committed to recognizing that a client has their own answers and that the coaches job is to empower the client such that they see this clearly for themselves. Therefore, a coach is a generalist - their training and skill is really in communicating with people such that they can identify and build appropriate goals and actions that fulfill their dreams. If you naturally have this skill, you 've got the greatest asset that a life coach needs. Some people have an innate tendency to 'be coach '. If you don 't naturally have this skill, rest assured that wish practice you can develop
Personal coaching as defined by Biswas – Diener (2009) is a professional relationship in which coaches work with clients to facilitate experiential learning and improve functioning and performance, of in the context of working toward specific goals. Some core assumptions that people have an innate capacity to grow and develop a focus on mutually agreed upon goals, and an understanding that the relationship is relatively equal and collaborative as stated by the author (2009). Some techniques that are in seen during a coaching process include but are not limited to the following list as provided by the author: active listening, the use of powerful questions which are based on broad and open-ended to raise awareness of the client to take stock of their values and resources, cognitive tools are used to reframe negative interpretations, use different types of encouragement tools, and that clients are held accountable (2009). The topics that will be discussed in this paper include what skills do I current have, which skills need to be develop, my comfort level and effectiveness, coaching approaches (including methods and tools), any challenges about coaching and finally how coaching relates to my professional career.
The author shows how coaching differs from counseling. To start with, Collins supposes that counseling focuses on negative psychology that includes dealing with conflicts, spiritual struggles, and emotional matters like depression, while coaching focuses on improving team-building and performance, career growth and finding fulfillment (2009). According Collins, counseling fixes what is wrong, while coaching enables individuals to reach their goals. Coaching is centered on the present and future likelihood, getting unstuck and attaining the set goals, while counseling is centered on causes of the problems that are as a result of the past, and attaining healing and stability.
But, you should not hire a life coach just because you wish to be like someone else. A life coach is here to help you eliminate all the clutter on your heart and head. You can be as great as you want as long as you are willing to give up some comfort. For sure, you will encounter a few bumps along the way but don’t give failures the license to break you. Open yourself to the possibility of greatness. Say “yes” to yourself and embrace the transformation that awaits
“A coach is someone who is equipped to aid individuals or groups and organisations to maximise their performance in pursuit of their desired goals.” (Dexter et al, (2011) p.4)
Coaching via Coaches help all sorts of people move forward in life as they specialize in meeting the needs of a wide variety of people with their own unique challenges and opportunities. Coaching makes a lasting impact on people’s lives because the coaching relationship developed between the Coach and the Client leads to constant growth and change in the Client. Coaching relationships brings to light what the person being coached already knows, but may not know they know, and then helping the person to make decisions and take action so they can move forward to accomplish a dream or goal they want to achieve. The continuing evolvement of leadership requires coaching.
Cognitive coaching is different from difficult conversations on many levels, but as I think about the difference that is most prominent it is the concept of coaching. As an administrator or teacher, we are charged with coaching and supporting the people within our building, whether it be our students or teachers. Coaching is the idea of supporting someone and helping lead them to where they need to be.
Becoming a coach has different ways. It can take some college, often teachers must teach in a field that matches their bachelor’s degree. Now there are coaches that teach as well or athletic coordinators. Athletic coordinators are coaches that deal with just sports and do not teach. Those have to go through a different process that regular coaches. For becoming a coach some have to know some health levels. With being a coach , athletes often get hurt and need to know how to properly take care of it. Sometimes when wanting to coach a specific sport you may have to have some background with that sport. Why would they just throw someone to teach kids something when the coach doesn 't know what he is talking about. It better to have a coach with experience to pass good skills to

Coaching is a form of development in which a coach supports a learner in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance (Passmore, 2006). In sports, a coach is a person involved in the direction instruction and training of the operations of a sports team. Bad coaching is the use of verbal abuse, intimidation, humiliation or threats practiced by coaches in order to exert some amount of power over the players.
Further, this type of working environment challenges the job satisfaction for people who works in this sector (Turner, 2006). Clearly then, it is through mentoring and coaching that a more effective leadership and management abilities are identified, developed, and shaped. Also, mentoring and coaching in the healthcare is vital in ensuring that patients are able to receive the appropriate level of healthcare services and that unconditional positive regard of the client is maintained. Further, it is through these tools that the healthcare system is improved, much more in the delivery of quality care to its
...y own personal development, I plan to attend further coaching training courses, one of these courses is, MAGIC coaching. This is a course run by the Coaching Academy and it teaches the following variation of the GROW model: Motivation, Assertiveness, Goal achievement, Initiative and Confident communication. This variation of coaching is focused more towards young people, and would therefore fit with my aspirations for the future. I would also be interested in attending a basic level course in NLP, as I believe this particular method will also benefit my coaching with young people.
