During the Renaissance there were many famous artists and thinkers. Two of them were Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Their art inspired many famous artists to come and is still admired. These two artists shared many similarities and differences like their background, style, and specialty. Leonardo da Vinci was born to a wealthy legal notary father and a peasant mother. He lived with his mother for his first five years, then he went to live with his father and his grandpa. His father had married a 16 year old girl that sadly died young and it was not until Leonardo was 16 that his father remarried. He received an informal education in Latin, geometry, and math. In 1466, he was a model from a master artist named Verrocchio. When Leonardo was 20, his father set up a workshop for him and he was officially qualified as a master. The The Renaissance lasted from 1350 to 1550 and was known as the rebirth of knowledge in urban society. After the Middle ages occurred there was no education, no common language, and no true form of unity within the people of Europe, so the Renaissance was the reintroduction of education, language, urban society and a sense of togetherness within the countries of Europe. During the Renaissance it was important to have more than one important or major tripe or specialty the people who possessed this quality where classic Renaissance man. Both existed during the Renaissance era which brought evolution to art, culture, and a way of life. Reforms occurred throughout within religion, political, and scientific beliefs. Leonardo matured in life while under the roof of his father and began his apprenticeship with Verrocchio painting at age fourteen. Upon earning more knowledge in painting, Leonardo became curios of anatomy which commenced his sketches of the human body focusing on skeletons and muscles (History, 2009). Michelangelo was a product of a long line of bankers and grew up in Florence, Italy which is where he began his apprenticeship with Ghirlandaio. Following the years with Ghirlandaio, he studied at the Humanist Academy majoring in art (History, 2010). Leonardo da Vinci was a famous painter, sculptor, and inventor that lived from 1452-1519. He was born in a small Italian town of Vinci and lived on a small estate that his father owned. Leonardo kept the name of the town that he was born in for his last name. Since his mother did not marry his father, he could not inherit his father’s land, nor did he have much going for him as a wealthy businessman. When people think of Leonardo da Vinci, they mostly associate him with art and paintings, such as his famous Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo believed that art was correlated to science and nature. Da Vinci was largely self-educated and he filled endless notebooks with examinations and suppositions about pursuits from aeronautics to anatomy.

His journals were filled with precise drawings of various regions of the male and female anatomy and were some of the first to accurately and clearly display the human body. Leonardo was able to do so with geometric proportions in his drawing known as Vitruvian Man. His detailed dissections, along with many other methods, played a big role in the development of a new kind of painting style that made the paintings and their background give off a three-dimensional illusion.

Among the qualities that make Leonardo's work unique are the innovative techniques which he used in laying on the paint, and his detailed knowledge of anatomy, light, botany and geology. These combined with his interest in physiognomy and the way in which humans register emotion in expression and gesture and his innovative use of the human form in figurative composition, blend with subtle gradation of tone (“Simplifying a Genius.”). Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni ( March 6, 1475 – February 18, 1564) an Italian Sculptor, painter, architect and a poet was probably the most important artist of the epoch of the Italian Renaissance, a period where arts and science changed from traditional to modern. He was the second of five children, whose parents were Lodovico di Leonardo di Buonarrotti di Simoni and Francesca di Neri del Miniato di Sierra. He was raised in Florence, and after his mother’s death he lived in Settignano. Michelangelo is one of the founders of High Renaissance and an exponent of a big movement called Mannerism. Mannerism “is a period of European paintings, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts lasting from the later years of the Italian Renaissance around 1520 until the arrival of the baroque around 1600….is notable for its intellectual as well as its artificial (as opposed to naturalistic) qualities” (Wikipedia.com) Michelangelo (as well as Leonardo Da Vinci) was considered to be the Archetypal Renaissance man because of his versatility in his disciplines.
Leonardo da Vinci was born in the heart of the Renaissance. Like most humans Da Vinci was born. Da Vinci’s full name was Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci. He was born in Vinci, Italy. His dad was a notary and his mom was a peasant (biography.com). He was born in the time of technological advancement and endless curiosity. He was raised by his father and his stepmother (biography.com). When he was five he moved to his father’s family estate and lived with his uncle and grandparents (biography.com). The birth of Da vinci likely seemed ordinary at the time, but was destined to make history.
Leonardo art work, invention, and thirst for knowledge show it an overwhelming desire wanting to learn more. His head was spinning with ideas to create something better, making something beautiful, and about how the human body works. His curiosity was so impressive that he would stay awake for hours on end hoping to change his theory and prove that there is more to changing to something magnificent. Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the greatest minds of his time. Most will remember him for his many masterpieces including The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and The Vitruvian Man. But he did more than just draw works of art; he was also an inventor and a mathematician who studied a large variety of subjects. Leonardo’s life is more fascinating than any one man could imagine. One of the biggest influences that helped spread a new form of christianity into the world was the printing press. William Caxton made the first printing press in England, he helped Martin Luther print and distribute his Lutheran Bibles in England (Emmons). Another early Renaissance inovatore was Dellanto, he painted the ceiling of the Florence Cathedral (Haber). Dellanto was a huge part of the renaissance spreading to France. Another person who had large influence on the French Renaissance was John of Luxemburg. John was king of Bohemia and although he wasn't an artist, he helped bring a lot of art and culture to France during the renaissance (John of Luxemburg). Religion was very big part of people's live during the renaissance so many of the famous paintings were of religious content. Piero della Francesca painted the Resurrection, which depicts Jesus rising from the grave, and the Chapel of Relics (Piero della Francesca). Francesca was a Catholic which influenced his art and made him one of the more popular artists of the time. Possibly the most famous and well known artist in our world history was Leonardo Da Vinci. Leonardo Da Vinci could be argued as one of the most famous persons in the Renaissance Era and one of the greatest painters to ever live. Leonardo is talented and has made many contribution throught his life. He did so many things such as painting, anatomy , mechanics, and architecture. And he is one of the reasons why the Renaissance era could be regarded at one of the greatest time periods in history.
Michelangelo and Caravaggio at some point in history were the most famous artists in Rome, Italy. Michelangelo a prominent architect, poet, sculptor, and painter found his success in Italy during the High Renaissance period (1490-1527). While Caravaggio was the most popular painter in Rome and spearheaded the Baroque period (1650-1750). Artists like Caravaggio in the Baroque period turned to a powerful and dramatic realism, intensified by bold contrasts of light and dark. Michelangelo’s reputation as a painter fluctuated during the High Renaissance, but his devotion to his art and his genius undoubtedly influenced artists such as Caravaggio during the Baroque Period. However, each artist had incredibly different styles, and utilized different mediums in their most popular works of art.
