Satire is tragedy plus time -lenny bruce De Botton views humorists as serving a vital role in society due to their ability of, not to only entertain, but to spread a message with impunity that the public will not speak of. And despite humorists using this freedom, De Botton assumes that his claim of the role of humorists is true however satirical comedians like lenny bruce and George Carlin have been proved that yes they can talk about important messages with humor and people will be more inclined to listen but they don't always have impunity.

So he wouldn't offend anyone during the show he offended people anyway so that didnt help

That filled all seats It was recorded , Albert Goldman said it was “the moment that an obscure yet rapidly rising young comedian named Lenny Bruce chose to give one of the greatest performances of his career. ... Lenny worshiped the gods of Spontaneity, Candor and Free Association. everything that came into his head just as it came into his head with nothing censored, nothing translated, nothing mediated, until he was pure mind…”

In 1961 his San Francisco performances was when his legal troubles started.On October 4, 1961, Bruce was arrested for obscenity at the Jazz Workshop the jury that was at his trial had law enforcement monitor his shows and appearances, causing a lot of arrests under the charge of obscenity he had talked
