Legalize Prostitution

“No person's human or civil rights should be violated on the basis of their trade, occupation, work, calling or profession” (“Committee” 1). Often considered the world’s oldest profession- prostitution, since the beginning of recorded history, has been in existence in nearly every human civilization on Earth. Social attitudes surrounding prostitution have evolved and changed many times from a notable necessity to a cultural malevolence. With the rise and evolution of many religious movements throughout history, primarily Christianity, prostitution has been criticized, shunned, blamed, persecuted, and demonized. Prostitution has remained illegal in forty-nine of the fifty United States of America and viewed by conservative religious zealots as a scourge that undermines the social institution of marriage and exploits women as well as poisoning a society’s moral climate. America is often considered a place where tolerance and diversity are the structural strength of its identity which demonstrates the success and growth of American culture around the world. Social climate changes has allowed tolerances of homosexuals, pre-marital sex and same sex marriages, yet prostitution retains much of its social stigma in America. Legalizing prostitution is one of the timeless debates with an array of moral, religious and social theologies ingrained on both sides of the debate. The argument of morality based on religious ideologies should not be the primary catalyst in maintaining the outlaw of prostitution.
