Legalize Drugs! I know what you’re thinking, are you crazy!
The debate over the legalization of drugs continues to disturb the American public. Such an issue stirs up moral and religious beliefs, beliefs that are contrary to what Americans should believe. I ask all of you to please keep an open mind and hear me out on this very controversial subject. All of us have in some way or another been affected by drug, whether it is a family member or the economic burden on society. Americans often take at face value the assumptions that drugs cause addiction, which leads to crime. This is true but abundant evidence exists to support the view that legalizing illicit drugs can help solve the drug problem in America. There is not a way to stop drug use, however there are two ways to combat the problem, like we have been or to legalize them, the legalization of drugs would help the United States in the areas of crime, increase revenue, elevate over-crowed prisons and decelerate the use of drugs in American society.
There is one fact society agrees on: drugs are everywhere in America. The so-called “War on drugs” has taken over the streets, back alleys, and the suburbs of America. It has caused a problem that mirrors the prohibition days of the 1920’s and early 1930’s. A
Fact that alcohol prohibition did fail and the prohibition on drugs is not only doomed to fail but it has already failed miserably. It has created more of a social cost than if there was never a “War on drugs”. The anit-drug policies have created an underground drug-trade, in which modern drug-dealers have taken the place of the bootleggers of the prohibition age. The fabled "War on Drugs" has not made even a dent in the problem, even though we arrest people and we stuff them into prisons as fast as we can build them. If one thinks otherwise, just look in newspapers and you will see that this war has failed miserably. To understand why prohibitions are doomed to fail one must look at the main reason: money. As long as there is someone out there that wants a product and is willing to any price for that product, there will always be someone to supply the product, for the right price of course, we call him or her the “Pusher”. There is not a way to stop drug use, it has crated an underground trade, and people are dieing for it every day, the legalization of drugs would help the United States in revenue, elevate over-crowed prisons and reduce the drug problem that is present in our society. But in America today people will continue to die of drug related crime because of the people that take the issues at face value. They do not look into the problem at hand they only look at the notion that drugs are bad for you. But is not it true that alcohol and cigarettes are bad for you? The government leaves that choice up to you, whether to engage in that legal activity. If an American wants to do something that has heath risk, is it not his or her choice to do so set forth by the constitution? The reason why this country is like it is today is because of freedom, freedom to do and choose anything we want to do, as long as it doesn’t infringe on the rights of others. Should not we as Americans have the right to choose what we want to do? All I ask is that you please keep an open mind about this issue do your own reach and then make your decision.

How does the difference between the way Dee (Wangero) and Maggie would use the quilts represent their two different ways of defining and treating their family’s heritage? Does the narrative give approval to Dee’s way or Maggie ’s?
The main objects of topic throughout the story are the quilts that symbolize the African American Woman’s history. Susan Farrell, a critic of many short stories, describes the everyday lives of African American Women by saying “weaving and sewing has often been mandatory labor, women have historically endowed their work with special meanings and significance” and have now embraced this as a part of their culture. The two quilts that Dee wanted “had been pieced together by Grandma Dee and then Big Dee and me [Mother] had hung them on the quilt frames on the front porch and quilted them” (par. 55) showing that these quilts were more valuable as memories than they were just blankets. The fabrics in the quilts “were scraps of dresses Grandma Dee had worn fifty and more years ago. Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrell’s paisley shirts. Dee wants to take the butter churn to use as a center piece for her table. She also wants to take a quilt that Mama promised Maggie, and hang it up to display. All of these objects have a sentimental value but Dee wants to display these objects as art pieces but do not truly understand their value. The quilt has a special meaning to Mama. The quilt was put together by Mama, her mother, her grandmother and so one. There is a lot of history hand stitched into the quilt. Mama will not let Dee have that specific quilt because it is worth more than an art piece. “When I looked at her like that something hit me on the top of my head ran down to the sole of my feet.” (Walker) Although, Maggie will put the quilt through everyday use but she will add to it, and pass it down to her children, which add to the family’s legacy. Mama Prefers to let Maggie have the quilt since she truly understand the value it holds. During the dispute over the quilts, Maggie says “She can have them Mama... Ever since marijuana’s introduction to the United States of America in 1611, controversy of the use and legalization of the claimed-to-be Schedule I drug spread around the nation. While few selective states currently allow marijuana’s production and distribution, the remaining states still skepticize the harmlessness and usefulness of this particular drug; therefore, it remains illegal in the majority of the nation. The government officials and citizens of the opposing states believe the drug creates a threat to citizens due to its “overly-harmful” effects mentally and physically and offers no alternate purposes but creating troublesome addicts hazardous to society; however, they are rather misinformed about marijuana’s abilities. While marijuana has a small amount of negligible effects to its users, the herbal drug more importantly has remarkable health benefits, and legalizing one of the oldest and most commonly known drugs would redirect America’s future with the advantages outweighing the disadvantages.
For many years, a real push has been looming on the idea of legalizing now illegal drugs. This has become a hot debate throughout nations all over the world, from all walks of life. The dispute over the idea of decriminalizing illegal drugs is and will continue on as an ongoing conflict. In 2001, Drug decriminalization in all drugs, including cocaine and heroin, became a nationwide law in Portugal (Greenwald). Whether it is for the good of human rights or not, decriminalizing drugs may be a good head start for a new beginning.
A “drug-free society” has never existed, and probably will never exist, regardless of the many drug laws in place. Over the past 100 years, the government has made numerous efforts to control access to certain drugs that are too dangerous or too likely to produce dependence. Organized crime grew into an empire, disrespect for the law grew, the per capita consumption of alcohol increased dramatically, city officials fell to gangsters, and the government lost money. It is obvious that prohibition was a miserable failure from all points of view. Reasonable measures were not taken to enforce the laws, so they were practically ignored.

Recreational drug use has been controversial for years. Government has deemed the use of certain drugs to be dangerous, addictive, costly, and fatal. Governmental agencies have passed laws to make drugs illegal and then have focused a great deal of attention and money trying to prohibit the use of these drugs, and many people support these sanctions because they view the illegality of drugs to be the main protection against the destruction of our society (Trebach, n.d.). Restricting behavior doesn’t generally stop people from engaging in that behavior; prohibition tends to result in people finding more creative ways to obtain and use drugs. However, just knowing that trying to control people’s behavior by criminalizing drug use does not work still leaves us looking for a solution, so what other options exist? This paper will discuss the pros and cons about one option: decriminalizing drugs.

It is important to be informed of what we are defending, and in this case it is to not legalize drugs. One may ask, what are drugs? Drugs are chemicals, that may affect your body in many different ways, whether it be good or bad. However, most of the time, it 's not always a positive outcome. Some drugs even leave lifetime damage to your brain and body. Although, there are many different ways to take drugs, some of the most common ways are; inhalation, ingestion, and injection. All three ways, however affect the body differently. You don 't always know what you are ingesting or injecting and even inhaling.
