Leading his Athletic Union team to the National Championship, and then as a freshman at St.Vincent-St. Mary High School, he averaged eighteen points per game and he led the Fighting Irish to an undefeated season and the state title. The following season, he raised his scoring average to 25.2 points per game, and his senior year he scored 31.6 points per game and took St. Vincent-St. Mary to its third state championship (Meyer).
