When one may think of real leather goods, places such as Italy and France may come to mind, but how about Portland, Oregon? The city of Portland is known to be an artisan community that produces durable handmade leather goods. Charles Heying stated in his book Brew to Bikes, that leather may be “perhaps the most internationally recognized artisan business in Portland (pg. 211).”
An artisan economy is one with fine-art production, traditional crafts, and specialty foods. Charles Heying describes Portland as an economy that is much more than that, one that “stretches the definition beyond art and craft to something broader, something grounded in the artisan approach that signifies a new orientation toward the making and use of goods; one that integrates the work of hands, head, and heart (pg. 40).” Authentic artisan goods are handmade and durable that are usually appreciated beyond other products because of the time and dedication it takes to produce them within a local shop.
As of the year 2009, Portland was ranked the 11th best place in the United State to start and develop a business. The 11th place showing is the best by Portland since the first list arrived in 2005. Back then, with the economy in “full swing,” Portland was ranked 39th. The new ranking puts Portland in company with fast-growing cities in the Southeast as well as Seattle (Culverwell). Portland and Seattle are among the top ten cities for women-owned businesses, according John Cook and his report on Geek Wire. Both cities moved up in the ranking, with Portland showing the biggest gains as it jumped to second slot behind San Antonio. Seattle just made it into the top 10, moving up from the 11th slot. (See chart above). What’s interesting about the results is that S...

When specifically referring to building relationships within an artisan economy one must focus on the attribute of localness that is promoted.
When you are able to visit the same market or leather craft store that you have been visiting weekly or annually you begin to create closer relationships and ties to the community that you’re involved in. Tony Martinez, the manager of Orox Leather described his experience with a business in the city of Portland, he states “the brand ‘Made in Oregon’ is getting a lot of attention internationally right now. It is great that we are in Portland or we’d end up in another city that doesn’t have enough emphasis on craft. The product would be unknown somewhere else.”
The French Fur Trade Beginning in the mid sixteenth century, French explorers were able to establish a powerful and lasting presence in what is now the Northern United States and Canada. The explorers placed much emphasis on searching and colonizing the area surrounding the St. Lawrence River “which gave access to the Great Lakes and the heart of the continent”(Microsoft p?). They began exploring the area around 1540 and had early interactions with many of the Natives, which made communication easier for both peoples when the French returned nearly fifty years later. The French brought a new European desire for fur with them to America when they returned and began to trade with the Indians for furs in order to supply the European demands. The Natives and the French were required to interact with each other in order to make these trades possible, and, over time, the two groups developed a lasting alliance.

A lot of people love using leather. Who wouldn’t? You can incorporate it in your daily wardrobe, accessories, home furniture, and even your car.
Shoes are one of the essential survival tools because they provide protection to our feet where the balancing and supporting of our physical weight occurs. Not only that, but shoes are also perceived as fashion items. In the current era, the kind of shoes we wear represent who we are and contribute in giving people distinct individualities. However, as looks can be deceiving, these shoes are not as simple as they look when it comes to production, manufacturing, distribution, consumption, disposal, and measurement of their values. In order for these shoes to become products, various actors are involved including: consumers, firms, government, and the workers (Commodity Chains That Bind, 2013).
. 1975 The second wave of women entering the job market was motivated less by desire and more by necessity and the need to earn money. Everything cost more now and the amenities of middle class existence can no longer be maintained on a single income. With the rising cost of houses, cars, college, private schools. The economic facts are clear, women must work. Now is the time for women's equality from Congress to all other government and corporate decision-making levels. With men, we get rhetoric, more problems and no answers, but lots of excuses. In the political arena women are making strides throughout America. Although women elected to positions of prominence do not always take pro-women positions, their presence makes a difference. The transnational company that works within government structures and agencies is in an ideal position to use its home country experience working with women managers, and executives to positively reinforce the role of women in government in those jurisdictions where the company has subsidiary operations. Although there are many ex...

The consumption of souvenirs play also a major economic role in tourism destinations where producing, consuming and the selling of souvenirs are worth billions of dollars each year (Swanson, 2012). On a smaller scale, many retail businesses located near or at the destination are dependent on the selling of souvenirs (Swanson, 2004). Furthermore, souvenir consumption also helps in supporting indigenous local people who produce and retail authentic handicrafts and souvenir goods (Tosun, Temizkan, Timothy & Fyall, 2007...
