Learning style is the way we tend to learn best. It involves our preferred methods and combination of various learning models. There are several learning style models. Assessment is the primary step in the process to determining the characteristics of the learner and identifying learning needs. (Edelman 222) Each individual Learning styles are different. In the VARK model the learners learning styles depends on how they wish to accept the knowledge. Neil D Fleming developed VARK model in 1987. The VARK acronym for Visual, Auditory, Reading/writing and Kinaesthetic. Auditory learning is attending lectures, tutorials, and group discussions. An auditory learners concentrate on their readings by reading them out loud, so they can hear how the words sound. They Involve in group discussions about topics to increase the deep understanding about the subject. Write / read learner prefer learning writing notes and reading texts. They put more attention into textbook words and they summarize the list of key points in their reading. But after the VARK assessment my learning strategy look like kinesthetic. Kinesthetic learner focused on learning by doing. They likes “ hands-on” approach in learning and like to demonstrate how to do things rather than explain. Now I can relate my learning strategy to my past experience in nursing about hand washing. I know the importance and steps of hand washing after reading the guidelines and picture shows the steps of hand washing. I thought I could easily demonstrate the hand washing after reading the steps. But when I was performing the procedure I couldn’t remember the steps, however when I physically performed the procedure step by step, I could do the procedure well without any mistake. A big component of my learning style is hands-on experience; learning while doing. This usually involved someone with more experience instructing me as I performed the task. Through the hands-on approach, I picked-up the knowledge and gained proficiency as I went along. My learning style also involved standard classroom instruction, which usually meant listening to lectures and taking notes. My note taking was not the best so in order to make up for what I lacked in note taking, I would read the textbooks repeatedly until I understood what I was reading. Auditory learners are students that learn by being read to, so that they can get the information in their ears. They understand it better that way, they can’t understand it through their eyes. This is the importance of books being put on tape. One perspective that I learned from watching this video about students with learning disabilities is that it is very important to get to know your students, so that you can learn the best way to teach them what they need to know.

Intelligence is defined as the power of perceiving, learning, understanding, and knowing. It is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. (Oxford Dictionary). The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination. (Albert Einstein). The overview of learning styles is that each person has a different way of learning and techniques. Howard Gardner, an American developmental psychologist states that not only do human beings have several different ways of learning and processing information, but that these methods are relatively independent of one another. The two tests that I have done have pretty much accurately described what kind of learner I am. VARK model states that my dominant learning style is Kinesthetic. Kinesthetic learners learn by doing things physically with hands on experience rather than listening to someone else. I tend to move around a lot when remembering or revising for an exam which helps me express a thought or understand a subject through bodily movement. My other style is Linguistic and Spatial Visual learning. I am a visual learner, have an integrated brain, meaning I use both hemispheres, and ranked highest in bodily-kinesthetic and logic-mathematical intelligence.

Everyone has different learning styles. Learning styles are important because they help you better understand materials in classes. They are there to guide you and become a better student. Learning styles help you better grasp the material and better process it through your brain. When learning you want to do what is most beneficial for you. That is why there is many different learning styles to suit every person. There is three different types of learning styles categorized. The first learning style is auditory. Auditory is meant for individuals that enjoy asking questions, talking and listening, as well as like to read out loud. Visual learners are more interested in charts, graphs, neat surroundings, seeing rather than hearing, and are pictured to be timid as they read to themselves rather than out loud. Finally there is the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic is to touch, to feel, and usually learn by doing.
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.
