When explaining the concept of learning to another person, I like to address it as how each person processes new information that has been put in front of them. The concept of learning is also when a person takes on a new experience and relates it to what they already know, in order to better understand it. Taking the class, Personal Dimensions of Education, has changed my perspective of learning, in a very positive way. I was already aware that not every person learns in the same manner, but it has been fascinating to learn exactly how individuals learning. It is incredibly helpful to know have a clear understanding of why I tend to have certain habits when it comes to school work, professional work and even how I take on personal projects. Having this understanding of what a learning pattern is and how I tend to use such patterns is a great tool to help better my own personal learning experiences.
From this course, I have learned that I am a dynamic learner, meaning that I use one or two of the four learning patterns, on a first use basis, while the other patterns are used on an as needed basis or are avoided. I use both Precision and Sequence on a use first basis, with a score of 30 in Precision and a score of 27 in Sequence. How I tend to ask a lot of questions, require clear directions and my need to always be organized are some examples of how I know I use Precision and Sequence on a use first basis. The other two patterns of Confluence and Technical Reasoning are both learning patterns that I use on an as needed basis. I have a score of 24 in Confluence and a score of 18 in Technical Reasoning. I will admit that I thought that this class was going to be a very basic intro to college class. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how not only helpful the material was, but also very interesting. It is always interesting to me to learning about any time of psychology or human behavior, so taking the time to learn more about exactly us as humans tend to learn was very enjoyable. To me, this class was not only a way to help better myself as a learner, but was taught about how people take in information, in a cognitive sense. I personally would not change anything about the class and feel that it went well beyond my expectations. Even to students how are not interested in cognitive studies could benefit a lot by taking on this class to help better themselves as a student and as a learner in general.
I find that I use more of technical reasoning and sequence in my day-to-day activities. I am the type of learner that learns hands on (technical reasoning) and I always have a daily checklist of things that need to be done (sequence). My LCI score were sequence 30, precision 32, technical reasoning 23, and confluence 25. I use my sequence pattern on a use first basis. I am always making to do lists, organizing lessons plans, and making sure my work in done in timely manner. I use my precision pattern on a use first basis as well. With precision, I find myself asking many questions. I am new to my career and I want to make sure I do things correctly and asking questions allows me to perform on a professional level. I also am a bit of a know it all. I know terrible trait but I find myself not wanting to repeat things that are not accurate therefore, I research everything. I use my technical reasoning on a use as needed basis. I really do enjoy doing things by myself. I am a hands on learner. I like to read the instructions while putting together the project. I use confluence on a use first basis. I like to do things my way. Doing things my way helps ease my OCD. Knowing that it is organized or filed in my way helps me function accurately. I also use confluence because I am the person who weighs out every situation with pros and cons. So, I tend to look at both sides of the story. All four of the patterns
As I planed to take this class, I thought this course would be like all other general education courses. I believed that it would be of little use to me. However, after attending the first class, my view has changed completely. I applied each and every theory to my life.
Learning is a cognitive process which involves generating linkages between concepts, ideas, skills elements, experiences and people. This process requires the learner to make meaning of something by creating and re-working patterns, connections and relationships. From various scientific studies, it has been proved that this cognitive process is largely premised upon mental capabilities and development of the brain (intime, 2001). For people to actualize their ideas and creativities of their minds, learning is inevitable. However, the ability to learn is dissimilar for all people- some learn faster than others. This infers the notion of learning patterns. In simple terms, learning patterns can be defined as forms through people learn.
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
I believe that teaching and learning is both a science and an art, which requires the implementation of already determined rules. I see learning as the result of internal forces within the person student. I know that children differ in the way they learn and grow but I also know that all children can learn. Students’ increased understanding of their own experience is a legitimate form of knowledge. I will present my students with opportunities to develop the ability to meet personal knowledge.

The Smart Measure test shows that that I have a logical learning style. I learn better using pie charts, and just flat out fact. When numbers and figures get put out there it draws my attention straight to it. Shockingly, I did scores three way for Physical, Social, and Verbal learning. They ere all very close o my score in logical learning. Basically, I am capable of learning in all sorts of different ways. Wehn it comes to learning I like to use a variety of techniques to ensure that I have obtained the the material that was necessary.

I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
Within the andragogical model described by Knowles, Holton, and Swanson (2015), adults need learning experiences that are different than those found in the pedagogical model. Instead of waiting for experiences that are directed and controlled by a teacher, adults need to have a clear rationale and understanding for the learning, feel past experiences are valuable, and have a developed internal system for motivation in order to help a learning experience be successful. The connection and orientation to the learning task, the readiness to learn, and self-concept are other important ideas to adult learning.
Wow! I have a personal learning style! If I had given any thought to my learning style prior to this course, I would have said simply, “Some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not.” Now I can say, “I am a grouper, a top-down learner, an owl, in the C-D quadrants, and my strong intelligences are linguistic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal”. What all this means, still, is some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not. But there I go again, simplifying the matter.
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
Among many teaching styles and learning theories, there is one that is becoming more popular, the constructivist theory. The constructivist theory focuses on the way a person learns, a constructivist believes that the person will learn better when he/she is actively engaged. The person acts or views objects and events in their environment, in the process, this person then understands and learns from the object or events(P. Johnson, 2004). When we encounter a certain experience in our life, we think back to other things that have occurred in our life and use that to tackle this experience. In a lot of cases, we are creators of our own knowledge. In a classroom, the constructivist theory encourages more hands-on assignments or real-world situations, such as, experiments in science and math real-world problem solving. A constructivist teacher constantly checks up on the student, asking them to reflect what they are learning from this activity. The teacher should be keeping track on how they approached similar situations and help them build on that. The students can actually learning how to learn in a well-planned classroom. Many people look at this learning style as a spiral, the student is constantly learning from each new experience and their ideas become more complex and develop stronger abilities to integrate this information(P. Johnson, 2004). An example of a constructivist classroom would be, the student is in science class and everyone is asking questions, although the teacher knows the answer, instead of just giving it to them, she attempts to get the students to think through their knowledge and try to come up with a logical answer. Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
I enjoyed the first learning activity of observation and can see this class getting into the mentality of education. I got this same thing from MGMT class and was surprised there too. I knew some about cognitive development prior to this class with the studies I have done, but I can still see the advantages of learning a new perspective.
