In recent years, the health care system has encountered major transformation in regards to implementation of Affordable care and the role of health care reform in shifting the focus from a disease-oriented health care system towards wellness and prevention care (Edelman, “et al”. 2014). As a part of health care team, nurses has to prepare themselves for this transformation and challenges to accommodate the needs and demands of nation. In order to advance with the challenges and achieve the requirements of the profession, nurses has to immerse in adopting these changes by pursuing higher education.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is the America’s largest philanthropy and its mission is purely health (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. [RWJF], 2015). In 2008, both issued a report as “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” and according to the report, nurses have the heavy responsibility to accommodate the increased demand of the nation’s health care system. In the transformed health care system, nurses has to focus on chronic conditions, primary care, and prevention and wellness care. Also in order to provide efficient and effective care, nurses has to work in team work with other health care professional and presume the role of leadership. To fulfill these roles and qualities, nurses has to be highly educated. Also pursuing higher education will enable them to work efficiently in team work with other health care professionals. They also recommended that nurses should achieve mandatory accrediting, licensing and certifying programs which will provide a platform of mastery and competency of the skills. Another point which was discussed by the committee is that the individuals who purse nursing as a profession they start their career by achieving the diploma of LPNs and LVNs after they complete one year program and they are face barriers as financial burdens, family commitments and having challenges in enrolling in Associate and Bachelor programs. In order to assist the individuals to achieve advancement in their nursing career, the committee endorsed the government to increase the numbers of grants, scholarships and educational awards for higher degree in nursing. It will assist more nurses to pursue higher level of education.
Another important issue which the report discussed is that to prepare the RNs to be ready to practice in the transformed health care system, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing should focus on examining the registered nurse in the competencies skill on community health, public health, primary care, care of elderly population
