Many organizations today place multiple demands on its leaders to provide vision, initiate change, and make difficult decisions when necessary. In order for leaders to handle these demands, leaders must be able to be flexible and most importantly be able adapt to change. Having strong leadership skills and a sense of direction are part of the trades that successful businesses seek in a leader. Therefore, it is important for leaders to engage effectively with their subordinates in order to build commitment, in order to motivate and improve the quantity and quality of their work. Good leaders will find innovated ways to motivate their staff using a variety of skills whether it is through training or experience, which will help to accomplish a common goal. Leadership Skills The Girl Scouts of America follow a quote, which states; “Leadership is essential to getting things done. But the qualities of good leaders-self-knowledge, commitment, willingness to look to others for support, being open to change, and a desire to go the extra mile can determine whether anyone chooses to follow”. (Leader, 2004) This can be used as an example how a leader can make a difference when you have a supported team. Moreover, it is important for a leader to be proactive by thinking three steps ahead with the goal of avoiding problems before they arise. The article “Leading to Leadership” refers to this as preventive maintenance in which it helps change, grow and improve. Other qualities include initiative, flexibility, good communication, respectfulness, confident, enthusiastic, be open-minded, provide consistency, and delegate with professionalism. Conclusion A leader is someone who makes an effort to help others to become more than they ever thought possible. Great leadership is unlocking that potential of a group, company, or organization. Not necessarily telling them what to do, but really inspire your subordinates to see what they are capable of, and then helping them get there because at one point or another someone inspired us too.
