Leadership vs Management

Intro & Purpose of Study

Concepts of leadership and management tend to be on ongoing topic in higher education. When you look into departments at any given university you will notice that student staff is considered Leaders but there title is manager. “ The word manager usually indicates that the individual so labeled holds a directive post in an organization, presiding over the processes by which the organization functions, allocating resources prudently and making the best possible use of people”(Gardner, 1990,p. 3). Leadership and management has become continues research topic that can and has become a controversial issue at times. (Moyles, date) The notion that managers can easily learn to be leaders, and leaders, through some unexplained quality, can both lead and manage is well represented in the literature. If that is the case why do we continue to have the discussion on how leadership is more ideal than management?
Gardner (1990) I once heard it said of a man, He’s an utterly first class manager but there isn’t a trace of the leader in him; I am still looking for that man, and I am beginning to believe that he does not exist. Every time I encounter utterly first class managers they turn out to have quite a lot of the leader in them. (p. 4).
“One cannot manage change. One can only be ahead of it” (Drucker, 1999, p.75). Throughout every class that I have had so far there has been one common topic “Leadership”, but what is leadership? And how does one become a leader? How are you supposed to tell the difference between a leader and a good manager? These are some common questions that tend to come up when having discussions about leadership. We tell students and staff that they future leaders. But ...

The third executive is currently struggling to balance leadership and management, while executive four is balancing leadership and management demonstrated in “Theory A” and is currently successful (Williams,1997). William’s study shows to prove that for one to be success in life they must learn how to balance management and leadership by, thinking of the rationalist as personifying management in the 20th century (Williams,1997).
(Williams, 1997) Thus, the challenge for managers and leaders, if they are to negotiate the horns of this dilemma, is to navigate the entire management- leadership continuum using the compass of awareness. This journey begins inwardly, for there in reside the key management- leadership partners, the animus and the anima (p.468).
