Leader is someone who can influence others and who has a managerial authority. Leadership is what leaders do*. Mangers have to be good leaders, as leadership is one of the four management functions. Leadership is an active characteristic in the management process. It translates decisions into solid actions. An effective manager is a manager who can both manage and lead their subordinates through motivating and directing. He has to influence his followers so they get their work done. Therefore, each and every group needs a leader to guide to them to ta safe shore and help them to coordinate and control their efforts.

Early Leadership theories:

Throughout history, many people had been interested to in leadership and the characteristics of a good leader. Some thought leadership is an innate trait and others thought it can be acquired.

Leadership trait theory: This theory was introduced in 1920s and 1930s, it indicates that leadership is an innate trait; means a person is born a leader. It included physical stature, appearance, social class, emotional stability, sociability and fluency in speech*. Later on, it was proved that this theory cannot differentiate between leaders from non-leaders, and more successful research was conducted to identify traits associated with leadership (the process of leading not, not the person).

These are the seven traits associated with leadership:

1- Drive: Leaders are very are determined and have high desire for achievement. They are very energetic and patient at what they doing. They always take initial steps.
2- Desire to lead: They good at motivating and influencing others. They hold responsibility and accountability on what the group does.

3- Empowering employees: give the employees the to take quick decision specially those who are in the lower organization levels. It can be beneficial for the organization to makes its employees take control. Knowledgeable employees will improve the organization’s productive and embrace change.
4- Leading across culture: National culture affects leadership style because it influences how followers will respond*. So when assigning a leader we should keep in consideration the culture of the followers. For example; Japanese leaders re expected humble and speak frequently while Arab leaders show kindness and generosity*.
5- Becoming an effective leader: to be an effective and influential leader you have to be well trained. Companies spend billions of dollars on leadership training programs so they can qualify their managers to become good leaders.
