This literature review will examine the leadership theories of Contingency leadership and Blake and Mouton’s Leadership Grid. In this case study, it will help to analyze the leadership theory of the two leaders that played a part failed to avoid the genocide war in Rwanda.
Leadership Style
Blake and Mouton’s leadership grid is studying of the degree of task-orientated against people-orientated. It helps to identify the leadership style of the leaders according to the way that they handle the situation. Under task-orientated leadership, the leaders are focusing on the production and efficiency on the output and plan ahead on how to complete it within the timeframe. While under people-orientated leadership, the leaders are focusing on the needs and interest of the members. The leader will break into parts according to their abilities. There are five leadership styles that are under this theory which are country club leadership, team leadership, impoverished leadership, middle of the road leadership and produce or perish leadership. This theory is able to explain the way of the leader of the work.
Based on Blake and Mouton’s leadership grid, Romeo Dallaire fits into country club leadership style which is referring to care for the needs of the members and making everyone contented in the team. By doing so, it caused the output to be low and lack of direction to do the task. Case study showed that Dallaire took his responsibility to take care of his troops. In case study, it stated that there were severe shortage of resources such as lodging and food but being turned down due to budgetary reasons. Dotlich & Cairo (2003) stated that an ineffective leadership can be produced based on the behavior, the way of handling task, characters and qualities. Booh Booh did not use his authority to assist and resolve the problem due to his fear. From the case study, Booh Booh watered down Dallaire’s report regarding the help from UN so in the end, Dallaire did not get any help from UN. Another example would be Dallaire commended to snatch the weapon caches but Booh Booh rejected due to his fear of the relationship of UN forces and the government.
This discussion will focus on leadership as described by Robert Dees in The Resilience Trilogy, Resilient Leaders text. The points made in the book can be personally related. The three most important concepts learned from chapter 1 and 2 are tribulation, risk management, and selflessness. It is crucial for anyone is seeking to delve into leadership that everything will not happen as planned all the time. After a leader experience failure, knowing the avenues to take to regain a solid footing is also key to successful leadership. Often leaders who are unaware of available resources fold and give up. In the military profession, when someone gets knock down they get up brush themselves off and get back in the fight.
This paper has summarized some prominent studies about leadership styles. Before understanding the styles which I may choose to practice, extensive studies on various leadership theories and approaches have been carried out. After conducting this research paper, I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all style for leadership. Lewin’s Model and Belbin’s Team Role Model have extended my knowledge and they have encouraged me to learn to assume different roles or styles in different possible situations. Therefore, I can get acquainted more easily to carrying out teamwork in my future job.

As we all know, leadership is very important. However, its effects are not always visible. In crises, high quality leadership tends to be both visible and decisive for a positive outcome. Leadership requirements and expectations change over time, responsibilities and roles must be review at regular intervals. In all nations and countries today, good leadership is important on day-to-day bases. Leadership involves working together with employees, their organizations and other parties to achieve results. Most leadership functions and roles vary according to level, framework conditions, and type of responsibility, competence requirements, and degree of autonomy. After doing research we have come to realize that different cultures have different leadership styles. They have their similarities and differences but this only makes them stronger as a whole. We have taken the time to do research on both the U.S. and Norway leadership styles. Norway seems to share many of its administrative and leadership values with other countries.

Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. It is also one among the collaboration and teamwork within which the team members can utilize each other’s strengths to counter the weaknesses of the individuals. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. Currently, leadership is part of enterprises’ philosophies to achieve strategic goals; not only are developing formal leaders, also find people who become influential by the skills and collective leadership (Schermerhorn, 2014, p. 306).
