There is a lot of importance in varying leadership styles. Different styles of leadership can all influence the outcome of a situation differently. Some styles tend to work better than others depending on the situation and the followers. It is also important to note that when leaders who possess different styles come together, those styles can blend very well. When differing perspectives come together, under the right environment, the strengths of both perspectives come together as well. When more than one leadership style exists within a group project, it helps drive things forward in a productive manner. Though some argument may come about, more often than not, that arguing passes and leads to productivity that was born through different perspectives and compromise. These differing leadership styles can keep the group from being stuck in singular track type of mindset. This is because at times a certain leadership style may attend too much focus in one aspect, while ignoring others. For example: having a task oriented leader and a relationship oriented leader in the same group, if handled right, can be very beneficial. In my shadowing, I noticed that when it came to larger activities, the organizational chart was used to direct activity and information. However, for smaller scale things, the organizational chart didn’t matter much. I do agree with this to an extent. If you use the organizational chart all the time, it may make your followers feel disempowered. I believe that not using it in smaller situations is a good move to keep followers empowered and comfortable with their work. I would advocate not sticking to an organizational chart, but as stated before, it just makes managing and dealing with larger tasks much more easy and fast. This paper has summarized some prominent studies about leadership styles. Before understanding the styles which I may choose to practice, extensive studies on various leadership theories and approaches have been carried out. After conducting this research paper, I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all style for leadership. Lewin’s Model and Belbin’s Team Role Model have extended my knowledge and they have encouraged me to learn to assume different roles or styles in different possible situations. Therefore, I can get acquainted more easily to carrying out teamwork in my future job.
To think one style of leadership is the only style seems rather pompous. You have several different types and brands of blood pressure pills to lower the blood pressure depending on the cause, therefore why would we think we only need one type of leader. At times I am needed to make a decision that I do not ask for outside participation. For example the attendance policy. I decided what would be a fair policy, how many points would be assigned for each call off and how long each point would stay active for. The situation did not need a meeting, it did not need input for others. I utilized a laisse fair style when the nurses were complaining about medication pass times. I simply gave them the task to develop a standardized medication time and let me know. When I hold a risk meeting I have several nurses and other disciplines present to assist at problem solving risk behaviors and that also means trying new techniques. Every situation is different and it is my responsibility, as the leader, to know which style would work best in each situation; sometimes it also depends on the people involved. Some staff need a leader to stand back more, others need one to effectively manage them. So not only do I have to know the situation, I also need to be sensitive to the persons involved, why it is important for me to know the staff I work
It is impossible to pinpoint precisely the time when interest in leadership styles emerged. However a set of experiments conducted by 3 social scientist in 1938 is a good time to begin. Kurt Lewin, Ronald Leppit, and Robert White used groups of children to study different approaches to exercising control. Their classic study identified three types of control: autocratic, democratic, and laissez faire. These three types of control came to be known as leadership styles.
My style of leadership according to the quiz by Cherry (n.d.) is participative leadership which is a type of leadership that engages the members of the team to participate in decision making and problem solving while the leader makes the final judgment in the deliberation process. This style of leadership allows members who are experts in their fields provide input to reach a more effective and accurate decision. This fits exactly into my leadership style. I always believed that in every aspect there is a greater or lesser person than you are, so, why not focus on the best in others and tap on their expertise in knowledge or skill to get the best results.

Particularly, two members within my group began to emerge as leaders due to their knowledge, skills, as well as experience working with our chosen population. There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. I have had the opportunity to work with leaders of different styles, and by just watching them, listening to them and seeing how the staff reacts; I can gauge what is productive with their staff. I try not to copy or mimic their style and ensure my own style comes through in being consistent, authentic and genuine. I feel by following these traits they give me necessary foundation and help me towards achieving leadership excellence.
There is a time and place to insert these styles and depending on the people being lead will help key into what style needs to be brought to light.
