I selected the acting manager of my unit, a clinical coordinator and the academic affiliation coordinator. These three nursing leaders have a good reputation as nurse leaders among the staff. They are efficient and strive for the attainment of our organizational goal of serving all the American veterans with honor (United States Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016).

Preferred Leadership Style and Achievement of Success

The acting manager of my unit, Margie Ortiz likes the servant leadership style. But, she uses the transformational approach. In her words, “If I always function as a servant leader and do not use authority, the staff may think I am weak. They will take advantage of it. Margie manages the unit using the transformational approach, whereas Michael and Kim use a mixed style. The major similarities that all three of my chosen leaders share in their style are the presence of authority and their focus. It is evident that to meet the organizational goal their focus shifts from the people to the task at times. They all used authority appropriately when needed.

The extent to which these leaders use the authority varies and that is the significant difference in their leadership styles. These leaders use the authority depending on the situation and the people. As per Margie, her leadership style allows her to make sure that no one steps over their boundaries in the workplace (M. Ortiz, personal communication, September 28, 2016). Hence, she exercises authority, if she feels the staff misuses her open approach to them.
