In the business world today, there are many different personalities and with those personalities comes different ways leaders run their organizations and guide their employees. The success and failures of a company is often determined by the governance of its managers, leaders and often CEO’s. Guidance and vision to employees from their leaders is a key factor and strong leadership yields great results. Successful leaders ensure that their team members have everything they need to be productive and successful with minimal barriers. There are several different types of leadership styles that can help or harm a company. At times companies have to deal with ongoing challenges and changes within the business climate in uncharted territory with no means of knowing what comes next. These leaders feel the need to be in control over every situation. Command and control leaders believe that the outcome of any situation is in their hands. They are not good listeners and offer one way communication with their employees. This leadership style does not allow others to have any comments or concerns regarding any decisions making. There are a lot of leaders that have developed themselves on how to be command and control managers; politicians particularly and leaders within organizations that have a culture based on command and control norms. It is hard to escape this leadership style’s historic influence and dominance, predominantly for certain religious organizations. Command and control leaders are well respected in nature and they use a top-down approach allowing the leaders that are in higher standards, and are in senior management positions to be treated with admiration and giving them the honor to have more power over others within the
Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
This paper has summarized some prominent studies about leadership styles. Before understanding the styles which I may choose to practice, extensive studies on various leadership theories and approaches have been carried out. After conducting this research paper, I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all style for leadership. Lewin’s Model and Belbin’s Team Role Model have extended my knowledge and they have encouraged me to learn to assume different roles or styles in different possible situations. Therefore, I can get acquainted more easily to carrying out teamwork in my future job.
Leadership is defined as the action of guiding an individual or group of people. Effective leaders shape the behavior and thought process of the individuals around them. As a result, the success of an organization is often impacted by the leadership style and approach of its leaders. Even when engaging with multiple people, impactful leaders maintain their own style of leadership but occasionally change their approach based on the motivational needs of each individual. However, regardless of the style, leadership within an organization is designed to drive the performance of their employees and it is done through proficient communication. This guidance influences the culture of an organization, which subsequently, helps to shape its leaders.
Strategic leadership comprises styles and abilities to yield employee performance producing the desired outcome. Leadership styles consist of various components, dependent on situations, and produce one of three responses- commitment, compliance, and/or resistance (Trident 2016). As leadership engages the use of power to influence employee outcomes, leaders develop personal leadership styles in order to empower the workforce. Efficient directors possess influential powers such as legitimate, expert, reward, coercive, and referent, allowing managers to obtain desired employee performance while empowering the workforce (Eveland n.d.). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
It is impossible to pinpoint precisely the time when interest in leadership styles emerged. However a set of experiments conducted by 3 social scientist in 1938 is a good time to begin. Kurt Lewin, Ronald Leppit, and Robert White used groups of children to study different approaches to exercising control. Their classic study identified three types of control: autocratic, democratic, and laissez faire. These three types of control came to be known as leadership styles.
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
A person’s title within the organization does not make them a leader. The driving factor which determines if someone is in a leader position is their behavior. This person who is a leader will guide those in the organization by influencing, guiding, giving direction, and opinions (Marquis & Huston, 2012). The culture as well as the climate of an organization begins with the leadership (Azaare & Gross, 2011). Each individual person has their own leadership style. Knowing one’s own leadership style will help them understand themselves and be able to grow as a leader. The purpose of this paper is to look at my own leadership style, including my strengths for leading others. A description of a potential challenge that I foresee due to my leadership style and a plan for my personal leadership development will be discussed.

The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. It is also one among the collaboration and teamwork within which the team members can utilize each other’s strengths to counter the weaknesses of the individuals. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. The great leaders know their limitations and are capable at utilize their strengths and also the strengths of others to compensate.
Within leadership, there is the opportunity for many issues in itself. Leadership styles and practices, one of the most vital aspects determining productivity in organizations, is truly what sets the standard for every level of management within a company. If a proper leadership style is not chosen and followed to lead a team within an organization, there will be no one to follow and the team will certainly not be successful. There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
