I received a call from a young lady I met at a self-improvement seminar given at The Peace Center. I was asked to speak on Leadership: Striving for the Incredible. After the seminar, I met with Janet Johnson, an office manager at Lewis Paper Company. Janet expressed the seminar gave her things to think on in determining her future plans. I gave Janet my card and said that if she needed my services she could call and discuss a private leadership coaching relationship. Janet conveyed her feeling of dissatisfaction in her current position. Janet had energy and excitement in her conversation, yet there was something lacking in Janet. I informed Janet that I was not a counselor nor mentor. I cited Dr. Tim Clinton in the lecture Life Leadership: What Separates People (n. d), “Don’t get distracted by that which is insignificant but focus on those things that will take you to your goals” (p. 3). Janet was 28 years old, single with no children. She was in a long relationship, but it ended as she felt it lack any future potential. Janet was college educated, lived modestly, saved money, and desire to own her own greeting card and stationary company. Janet’s current position does not offer a bright future. However, due to her diligence and hard work she gained a promotion and the attention of upper management. Yet, Janet wanted more and to utilize her creative potential as a greeting card and stationary publisher. Janet had a fear of striking on her own and managing her own staff. Everyone around Janet told her not to follow her passion and keep her good job. Janet had a spark in her eye and conversation when speaking of her publishing company. Janet researched the industry and worked within one facet of the business. Janet needed motivation and encouragement to boldly step out in faith and live for herself within her own happy place. Janet had an idea but no concrete written business plan. Bain et al (n. d) in the lecture Essential Elements to Effective Leadership Coaching inform, “Plans need to be written down, measurable and attainable but stretching” (p. 2). Janet apprised me that her sister was a business plan writer and asked Janet to let her work with her to do a business plan for Janet’s business idea. I encouraged Janet to begin the writing, she needed to derive how she wanted her business structured, location, a start-up budget and its mission statement. Janet excitement came with a flurry of ideas and loose ends that need attention. I calmed Janet down and told she needed to set other goals and milestones to place her in position. I cited Tony Stoltzfus (2005) “in order to grow as a leader, a person must gradually increase in ability to take initiative and bear responsibility” (p. 67). In her opinion, the academics served as a foundation to applying the skills in the field. Growth and learning did not happen until she joined her internship and started training, hands-on. She is a twenty-two-year-old Guest services Agent who is presently working at the Sheraton Hotel in Queens, New York. During my interview with her I discovered that she and her family of four migrated from Jamaica in search of a better life here in the United States of America. She portrayed a warm and friendly personality, as such it was easy for me to talk with her about self-identity. She informed me that while she was in Jamaica she excelled in High School and went on to University where she studied Health Science. Her reason for choosing that field was because her mother was very much involved in her development and encouraged her to stick to the sciences where she could specialize in becoming a medical doctor in the future. Listening to her, I realized that her decision at the time was based on what her mother had in mind for her and not necessarily what she wanted to become. I questioned her if she had figured out what she wanted to do with her life then, she clearly had no idea therefore she just followed her parent instruction. A leader is someone who can encourage even those with feeble hearts, insecure souls and self-doubting minds. A leader takes not only their vision but everyone’s vision and create one beautiful creation that is seen throughout the world. My experiences with leadership range from the worst to the best. Once holding a great leadership position myself, I can testify the benefits of great leadership and the disadvantages of horrible leadership. Through my experience with great leadership and the effects on the people, it seemed to the naked eye that everyone was thinking the same thing at the same time. In actually it was the leader uniting the members together on one common chord to produce a sound that would remain in the souls. A leader is someone who not only leads, but also encourages people to do their best, share a collectively common idea or passion with a group, and challenge the process of a traditional style.
The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.

Hambrick, Jr is an accomplished leader that embodies the values, attributes, and competencies that I aspire to convey to my subordinates. One of my responsibilities was to be a friendly visitor at the senior’s retirement home. I was able to apply my human service skills with clients in several ways. I was able to be an active listener at every session I had with them. The ability to listen carefully helped me to comprehend deeper issues and to come up with better solutions. My listening skills established a strong bond of trust between me and the client. It permitted me to reflect back on what clients say and stay engaged in every conversation. This provided me with the skill of active listening. I was able to demonstrate empathy. One of the seniors at RAIN Inc. named Gloria Vital impacted me, by demonstrating trust for being able to share personal, issues that she was facing. This experience taught me personal relationships matter. The difficult journey she faced a couple of years ago will empower her and make her stronger. She had a surgery on her face which left her with a low-esteem toward her appearance. I remember this being a constant topic among our conversation. This trauma prevented her to live a normal life. According to Bryant (2016), “self-leadership is the process by which you influence yourself to achieve your objectives.” So how do you achieve this, you start with developing your leadership point of view. Developing my leadership point of view forced me to reflect on the leader models in my life. It also forced me to evaluate the key events and experiences from my past and determine how they have impacted me as a leader. This self-reflection process allowed me to discover who I am, what my values and beliefs are and what my true purpose is in life.
