Leadership is arguably not just what one does, but who one is. Coach Owens, the head coach of Chapman University 's football team, defines leadership as taking initiative, doing what is right, and focusing on something other than yourself and potential rewards. The sub-components of transformational leadership in which Coach closely exhibits falls under the Relational Theory. In order to be a good leader under the relational theory, one must have a mutual and genuine relationship with their followers. “The most important thing to me is recognizing that the real true value of what we do [as coaches] is when you can reacquaint with a player ten or fifteen years later and the lessons they learned from the game and you as a coach have been applied in their real life.” According to B.M. Bass, in order to be considered an transformational leader one must exhibit one of four aspects of transformational leadership. These consist of inspirational motivation, idealized influence, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation. Inspirational motivation is what Coach knows all too well. “I consider myself to be a natural leader,” say Coach Owens. Although he has a title of just being Coach Owens, he is much more than that. Coach makes sure that his players play hard but work harder, making them exceptional student-athletes. “We want success not just on the field but in the classroom [too]. Leadership has been written about millions of times in the past, and heading in the future, it will be the topic of many debates, books and newspaper articles asking, and in some cases answering the question, “What is leadership?” According to Peter Drucker: “leadership is lifting a person’s vision, raising his performance and building personality”.
There are almost as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define leadership (Stogdill, 1974). Therefore, it is very difficult to understand what leadership actually is. According to John Sculley leadership revolves around vision and ideas and has to do more with inspiring people towards direction and goal. A leader is a person capable of inspiring other people to do things without sitting on top of them with a checklist. Precisely, leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a desired goal (Northouse, 2012). Leadership has morphed into a redeeming quality that many people of our society strive to have. Although leadership is a sought-after quality, many do not possess the courage it takes to stand up and portray the positive examples of leadership. Instead, there is a warped image in our minds that leadership belongs to the loudest voice in the room. Leadership is so much more than this. To be a leader, means to set positive examples for others to follow. A leader is a shining beacon for others to find when they are struggling in the dark. A leader is not someone who simply takes charge of others. A leader is someone who commits to giving back to the community, focuses on schoolwork, and helps others. For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society.
