Can anyone be a leader?!... Leadership is defined as the ability of a person to be ahead of a group of individuals, set an example for them by taking the initiative and participating in executing any task not just sitting on the chair giving orders. A person who can wisely choose people to work with him. He should motivate, inspire them, consult their opinions and monitor their performance in order to reach their goals. The wise leadership represents one of the most essential foundations that build the structure of any country, establishment or company. Leadership can be a reason for raising a nation, but it can also be one of the causes of its perdition. He was an African American activist who was influenced by Gandhi and his track of non-violence opposition. For many years, he protested against the racial discrimination and the oppression which threatened the life of the African Americans. One of his famous achievements was his march on Washington in 1963 when he led over 200,000 people. They represented different parties of the American society. He gave his memorable speech “I Have a Dream” in front of the statue of the former president of the United States Abraham Lincoln who was a symbol of struggling for the rights of the slaves. He showed how a leader can be a motivator, an inspirer or a mentor. In this speech, he said what the people wanted to say but they could not because of the segregation they suffered from. He was the voice of the voiceless. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” A quote that showed his hope for the future. Another event proved that he was worthy to be described as a leader was Montgomery Bus Boycott. When an African American lady called Rose Parks refused to leave her seat to a white person, so she was arrested. Nelson Mandela, the first president of South Africa. He had an effective role in retrieving the civil rights of the original citizens in a country where the minority (the white people) ruled and the majority were neglected. At that time, South Arica suffered from a system called “Apartheid” which was based on the racial discrimination. Mandela spent 27 years in prison as a punishment for sacrificing his life for the sake of his country. When he got out of prison, he believed that taking revenge would not let him achieve his dream of justice, although what he encountered in prison from maltreatment, humiliation and violence. He was elected as the first black president of South Africa. The major issue that concerned him was how the black and white South Africans would live together, how to unite them behind one purpose. He showed the world another quality an effective leader must have which is creativity. He managed to reach an idea outside the box. He gave much attention to the South African national rugby team. He supported them, supplied them with the resources required to build a strong team in order to be able to compete in the rugby world cup which was held in South Africa in 1995. He succeeded in his mission to unite all the South Africans behind the team until they reached the final and won the tournament. This epic period of Mandela’s life was filmed in the famous movie “Invictus”
