LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN Journey as a leader Leadership is a process of influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a goal or a specific task. Leadership has nothing to do with seniority or one’s position, with titles, personal attributes but rather a leader is someone who has followers, has the capacity to transform a vision into reality. We live in a society where there is interaction, limited resources, skills which, bring up issues such as culture, economic transactions, government and governance, international relations, arts and entertainment to be dealt with religiously. Thus, with regards to these, leadership has helped me to become more focused to figure out many things that has caused the slow development of Ghana as a nation and Africa as a whole. I have also been able to determine the link between leadership and an ideal society. I have also learnt that every society has elites and their actions could have multiplication effects on everyone mainly the masses that make up the unseen forces that can cause change. The only way one can make changes is if they learn from others, become pragmatic, and make well informed decisions. My journey through leadership four has taught me to be a much better person and believe in myself. It has help me manage my emotions and that of others, know my strengths and weakness as well as find ways of addressing them to my advantage at the same time not being detrimental to the society. Being in the leadership four classes has been an eye opener and inspiring experience. People like the late Gloria de Souza, Jeroo Billimoria and Veronica Khosa embody leadership. They are people who dared to thing and do things differently, attended to th... ... middle of paper ... ... progress and losses. I require of myself to be answerable to my roommates, friends, family and loved ones who would help me attain these objectives and persons who have invested in me. My enforcer would be my roommate who is also a classmate of mine thus ensuring effective supervision. Rewards With reference to rewards, the success of all the above or at least some would lead to self-fulfillment. I would begin to feel I have matured enough to take on greater tasks in the world. The fact that I was able to change some bad aspects of mine mean I can help others to do so. Sanctions My inability to achieve these objectives would cause me to do an extensive self-evaluation to know the reasons why and if that does not turn out well I may have to see a psychologist to take me through a step by step self-disciplinary approach, career path advisor or a counselor for help.
In my own experience leadership is not just about one person telling others what to do; it’s about more than just giving orders. It is about getting a group of people to work together towards a common goal with more than just the goal in mind. It is also not just about setting goals for the group but also setting personal goals for the individual, guiding and supporting them all
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
I must say that my personal strengths lies within my determination, perseverance, and persistence to work hard and become a better person. Throughout my whole life, I have used individuals and their compliments to motivate myself to become better, faster, and stronger as a person, hoping to exceed their expectations. That might sound shallow, but those individuals are the fuel that keeps me from ever giving up. On the other hand, my personal challenges consists of the fact that I am a weakness to disappointment. Disappointment from a mentor whom I respect can stop me in my tracks, leaving me in state where that is the only thing I can think about. As a result, I work hard to not just stop disappointment but to prove them that their disappointment in me is just temporary. However, I hope you do not come to conclusion that my hard work is only to please other but to please myself and the personal expectation that I
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate and inspire others (Gill, 2006). It is therefore defined as a process whereby a leader influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2013). A leader has to make a decision for something to happen and provide his followers with clear direction (Rost et al, 1991). It will evoke feelings of challenge, excitement and involvement for the followers to proceed with the task (Gill, 2006).
Leadership can be defined as the method in which one influences a group of individuals for a common goal. There have many great leaders in the world but these leaders are not born leaders. One must have willpower and the desire to become an effective leader. These leaders become dependent upon based upon their abilities and their success. A leader is looked upon for guidance and the inspiration to know what the right thing to do is. The theoretical foundations of the research of leadership are firmly supported. To better understand the foundations and understand the focus of leadership, it is essential to have knowledge of the history of leadership, the meaning and concept of leadership, types of leaders and leadership styles, and issues in leadership such as issues with culture and gender. According to Antonakis (2004), “leadership researchers have struggled for most of the last century to put together an integrated, theoretically cohesive view of the nature of leadership, invariably leading to disappointment in those who studied it” (p.4). An overview of the history of leadership is necessary to understand the concept of leadership because it also provides a framework for other areas of leadership. In any conventional group, individuals fill different role and one of those roles must the leader which is essential for the group to achieve it purposes.

Leadership can be defined as the act of convincing people to willingly carryout defined objectives, it can also be defined as the ability to influence the course of action of people.
Leaders are the individuals who help to create options and opportunities. They help in identifying the choices and solve the problems. They build commitment and coalitions. Leaders do this by inspiring others and working along with them to construct the shared vision of the possibilities and commitments of a better group, organization or community. They engage the followers in such a way that most of the followers become leaders in their own right. The variety of demands of an increasingly complex world very often require that leadership be shared by most of the members of an organization, in appropriate ways for different situations. A leader is the on...
"A leader is an individual (or, rarely, a set of individuals) who significantly affects the thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors of a significant number of individuals” (Gardner, Howard 2012). An essential part of a leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence people to follow their lead. Leaders are both men and women who have the ability to influence others in a community, control situations, connect with others and persuade others to follow them or the goals they define. To be a good leader one must set a good example and make correct decisions for difficult choices. I myself am implementing leadership skills into my every day life. Leadership skills are all around us. They can be applied to any situation where one may be required to take the lead. This can be
The leadership challenge is all about how leaders mobilize others to make great things happen in an organization (Kouzes &Posner, 2012). It is based off the leader’s practices and how they work together as a team to innovate, challenge and reward others in any given situation. It’s about getting others to follow the leader and tag along on the leadership journey. There are five practices that Kouzes and Posner discuss in the book and they are as follows: model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encouraging the heart. These five practices are what happens when leaders engage with their team and great things happen (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). A leader is known for what they do within an organization.
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Coming to Ashesi University completely changed my views on Leadership. I realized I was a leader so far as I could influence people around me intentionally or otherwise. I learnt about the difference between big L’s and small L’s with Big L’s being people in position of authority while small L’s were people not necessarily in any position of authority, but anyone who could cause an influence. This realization shocked me and I realized I had been a leader so far as I caused an influence whether negative or positive in someone’s life. Courses like Leadership 1 taught me differently from what I had always known about leaders. For instance, first introductory lectures of servant leadership got me confused. Quotes like “you are a servant first” threw me away. What! A servant was the last thing on earth I would ever think of becoming. Why am I a servant first? What happened to the benefits I am supposed to enjoy as a Leadership? This was not what my senior high school days exposed me to. I was supposed to enjoy all the benefits that came with my position as a leader. Now I am being told to become a servant first and to serve. Finishing the Leadership 1 course made me understand that the reason why most leaders fail and especially most African leaders failed was because of the similar mindset to mine they had as becoming a leader. Which is to enrich and benefit themselves only. Getting to understand this began to make me think differently as a Leader. This was because I hated how African continent was so poor even though we have enough natural resources to our disposal that could better the lives of everyone in the continent. As I watched my family suffer to make ends meet and the bad roads and services I encounter daily as a citizen of Ghana, I understood fully that there was no way Africa would develop to its full potential if majority had the same mindset
Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or most powerful. Leadership in organizations has a different and more meaningful definition. A leader is someone who sets direction in an effort or task and influences or motivates people to follow that direction. The power point presentation explains leadership is the influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context.
