From what I’ve learned about leadership during this course is that a leader is someone who influences the thoughts and behaviors of others. Before this course I never looked at myself as a leader but more as a manager. I never put any thought into my true personality, my leadership style, and things that motivate me. Therefore, I have done some self reflecting on my abilities of being an effective leader. I can’t say that I’m a natural born leader, but I can say that I do have some natural leadership characteristics to become an effective leader. With hard work and dedication I could achieve being in a leadership position in the future.

My commitment, honesty, and accountability will motivate my team to success. I have always been strong at motivating others while getting in and helping out myself. When a problem arises someone has to step up and do something, so who better than me to motivate and help take care of the situation. Leaders are seen as role models and they are to set a good example for their …show more content…
I don’t have the strongest skills when it comes to creative thinking and implementing my own creative ideas. I don’t have a powerful imagination I feel that I need a little more confidence in myself and not let fear take over. I can improve on this by staying alert to opportunities that come my way and thinking outside the box. I’m not knowledgeable on wide range of information, but I’m a very resourceful person. I do have the ability to recognize great ideas and I will help assist to turn those ideas into reality. Therefore, I will have members on my team who are very creative and challenged intellectually. I will provide them with the tools and resources are needed to help them to stand out and excel in their career. Another weakness I have is jumping out there and taking risks. I have never been a risk taker and I avoid it as much as possible, I like to plan and think things through before jumping into something. This is something I need to work on during my career to help with enhancing innovation. I will have have an open mind when it comes to encouragement and risk taking. I will also work on pursuing innovation for the growth of our
Lastly, the key to successful leadership is getting all of one’s followers on their side. In order to achieve this, leaders must gain all their followers trust. Bennis outlines four key elements to gain this trust. Primarily, constancy must be enforced. Leaders must stay the course. Second, congruity is essential. This is so the leaders can “walk the talk.” Third, reliability is needed so that leaders are present when it matters most. Lastly, leaders honor their commitments through integrity. All of these important, aspects gain the trust of their followers by their side.
Being able to lead and inspire a team to perform their best and strive to achieve goals. I do this through relationship building, being passionate about the goals, and influencing those around me.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
I believe that leadership is not something that you are born with, but that has to be learned over time. You learn to become a leader from watching other leaders, and also from personal experience. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. Being a leader does not mean you get to boss people around by telling them what to do. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day. He would tell us many positive things and would check up on us. He was a great teacher and a great leader. Leadership may be one wo...
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.
The learning obtained from the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course has been valuable. From this course, I have learned that while someone can be a manager or a leader, it is better to be both. The various topics discussed throughout the eight week course have provided the unique insight necessary to be an effective leader. The insight gained allow for the identification of the behaviors that an effective leader must possess and continually develop. By identifying these behaviors, I am better able to shape my leadership style and goals so that I can achieve my full career potential as a leader within my organization. Ultimately, I realize that it is important to both do things right and do the right things in all my actions within an organization.
Leadership involves providing direction, gaining alignment, and receiving commitment from followers (Shi & Johnson, 2014). Trust is very important in any relationship, whether it is two people or a group of people, trust is vital. Trust fosters an open relationship and establishes an environment of comfort and support. By building trust, I provide an environment where my staff members are more prone to be more efficient in their work and trusting in my decisions as well as develop their ability to build relationships with
I think some of my own strengths based on “The Leadership Challenge” are leading by example or modeling the way, challenging the processes, and encouraging the heart. From my experiences I know that I tend to put a high standard on myself and the work I produce, I want to be the best and I try to do the best that I can on any work that I put out there. I hope that when others see the amount of work I am putting into projects and the
Leadership is defined as the art of influencing others for the profitable achievement of organisational goals and objectives (Bryman and Parry, 2013). In a sense, leaders are considered to the most valuable asset of an organisation as they are responsible for moulding the behaviour of employees for pursuing shared goals and objectives of the organisation. According to Bass (1990), leaders within an organisation are transformational as they help employees to differentiate between what is right and wrong, good and bad, beautiful and ugly, as well as important and unimportant. The foremost goal of leaders within an organisation is to develop employee’s self-interest, while helping followers to provide exceptional results.
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
Leadership and motivation are closely interconnected. By understanding motivation, one can appreciate better what people want and why they act as they do. Also, as noted in the previous chapter, leaders may not only respond to subordinates, motivations but also arouse or dampen them by means of the organizational climate they develop. Both these factors are as important to leadership as they are to manager ship.
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Leadership is something that is heavily prevalent in the workforce and in the world today. Being a leader, in my opinion, takes someone (or a group of people) who is willing and able to lead a few or many people. Not every leader though is successful or leads in a positive way. There definitely exists both good and bad leadership. Many leaders fail while many achieve extraordinary milestones. But everyone, not just leaders, have their pitfalls and rough patches in life. I know that I myself have some weaknesses as a leader, and that is what I want to take some time to reflect on.
After the self-assessments from the book, now I know what kind of leader I can be, what are the weakness I need to work on and how I can influence my team and the people outside my work environment. This course has taught me many different type of leadership style and one cannot be an effective leader but just following one specific style. To be an effective leader you need to assess the situation and act according to the situations.
This beleieve was encouraged by my success in being a team leader during my management project course for school, and the reasurance from my friends and family that I had the characteristics of what its takes to become leader, and I was ‘born’ for the position. With this in mind, I applied for a leadership position within the student organization, ESN, as a VicePresident. After four months of holding this postion, I realized that I need to improve my leadership skills; leading a team of 12 memebers of different divisions and objectives is different from leading one of 5 members ( like I did in my management project course). I realized that being a leader takes more than being ‘born’ for it. It requires practice, patience, and many other attributes that I am not yet competent in. Though I have attributes ( adaptability, convincing, etc. ) that are important in a leadership position, to become a succesful leader I need to further develop my other talents. I hope that with this new found awareness, that I will be able to develop my leadership skills next semester through watching management classes online and reading articles that gives advince on how to increase leadership
