To gain a positive influence, it comes down to more than just personal motivation and ability. Leadership is a science; leadership is a practiced and developed trait. The power to influence is often broke down into six categories: personal, social, structure, each measuring ability and motivation independently.
Consequently since leadership and influence can be gained through motivation and ability, it is important to understand the human element to being a leader with powerful influence. Being miserable in normal operations is going to affect the personal, social, and structural ability

In order to change personal motivation as Grenny would suggest, the leader must carefully demonstrate three (3) qualities that Lencioni is instructing. Furthermore, we can discuss these in depth and see how the six sources of influence play a key part.
Anonymity, Irrelevance, and Immeasurement are three items that lead to being miserable at work. Furthermore, if these three items are not in focus by an individual’s manager, individual motivation and ability will decline. The biggest similarities are going to come within the motivational category of the six powers of influence. Motivation can be directly tied to anonymity, irrelevance, and immeasurement.
People cannot be fulfilled in their work if they are not known. (Lencioni, 2007) To explain further, we are all human beings and we all have feelings that drive motivation. When recognized for our accomplishments our personal motivation will be directly impacted as a result. Avoiding anonymity takes recognition and once recognition is present the individual feels less as a statistic and more as a human being who loves their
In a firm, management and leadership are important and needed. Leadership and management are similar. Actually, leadership and management are totally different. The leadership would influence the firm. The leader would have difference leadership styles to lead the subordinate.
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Yet,
The common thing, character or factor in the above definitions of leadership is influence; influence is a very important characteristic in leadership. Influence is changing or altering the perception of other people to achieve a set out goal (Yukl, 2006, as cited in Mumford, 2010). Influencing others (subjects, colleagues, etc.) is how leaders lead because without influence, there is no leadership (Bacon, 2011). Know when and how to use it….. Other characteristics of leadership include honesty, confidence, ability to delegate, creativity, ability to inspire others, integrity, fearlessness, respect for other, etc.
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
This book is for people who are willing to accomplish the work of a leader. Maxwell breaks down leadership into principles based on biblical foundation which one can apply in his life. He defines the levels of leadership into five and describes each level in the specific way. Those levels of leadership are: position, permission, production, people development, and personhood which the higher someone goes, the easier it is to lead. According to him, leadership is the key to success in any endeavor and leadership can be developed. A review section in every chapter provided to encourage the reader to join the author with a ‘fill in the blank’ section. Certainly conveying his message in an interactive way, this makes the book even more interesting to read. Individual can easily understand and remember his message through bold headings and dozens of quotes he wrote. After more than four decades of observing leadership, Maxwell throughout his book concludes that leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less.
A leader’s enthusiasm and motivation towards a job is often communicable to other employees. Motivation begins with a leader, so it is crucial for leaders to have a thorough understanding of what motivates them self. Different leaders have different underlying motivational factors. For example, an instrumental leader derives motivation from extrinsic sources such as pay and promotions. (Scholl, 2003) A self-concept external leader is “dominated by receiving public affirmation that the group 's successes are due to their efforts and skills”. (Scholl, 2003) Credit is seldom given to subordinates from a self-concept external leader. Contrary, “leaders dominated by self-concept external motivation are more interpersonally based.” (Scholl, 2003) Public recognition is less motivating and less important to these types of leaders compared to the latter. (Scholl, 2003) As leaders better understand the factors that motivate themselves, they can better motivate
Influence: is the process of leader communicating ideas, gaining acceptance of them, and motivating followers to support and implement the ideas through change (Lussier & Achua, 2010). This element is all about the relationship between leader and followers. Moreover influencing includes power, politics, and negotiation. Leaders gain the commitment of followers who are willing to adapt and get influenced.
It is very common in this day and age to become discontent with where you are at in leadership. One of the reasons for this discontentment can be because influencing all of those around us is not an easy thing to do. If we are to not only stay content, but also excel in leadership we must keep in mind that ninety-nine percent of leadership does not come from the top of any given organization, but the middle. John C. Maxwell, author of The 360-Degree Leader, speaks to us about the principles that leaders can use to bring value and influence to any organization from any level within the organization, enabling them to do, what John C. Maxwell describes as leading up, leading across, and leading down.
Robbins and Judge define motivation by means of three elements. The first element is defined as being the process that account for an individual’s intensity which is concerned with how hard a person tries. The second element is direction that benefits the organization and the third element is persistence which is a measure of how long a person can maintain effort. Motivation is also driven by certain situations that vary between individuals and within individuals, at different times. (Robbins & Judge, 2007, p.186) These elements should not only be expected from employees but from managers as well.
Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority.

Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
