What is a leader?
Seems like a simple question, right? But yet the definition varies from person to person. According to dictionary.com they define the word leader as, “a person or thing that leads.” To me this definition seems to be very broad and could be numerous things. To me a leader does not depend on a person’s position within a company or even having anything to do with a specific job title. A leader does not have a specific personality or even a set of specific characteristics to make them called a leader. Leaders works with a group of people no matter how big or how small in results of completing a given goal or task. In fact there are many qualities that help shape a person, and most people are leaders without even realizing it.
How I lead?
I do not believe I lead in one particular way or follow one particular leadership quality instead I lead in multiple ways.
When I lead I am a motivator not a diminsher. I see myself as a motivator because I do not like to put others down or hurting feelings of other people. I am a very indecisive person so when I am able to hear others people’s thoughts, opinions, and even ideas it helps me collect my own thoughts. For example I like to hear all the sides of a story before I come up with the conclusion. When I lead I like to make sure that everyone has the feeling that they are part of the group I do this by motivating them I also encourage them to share their thoughts and ideas about the task we are working on, and I even tend to challenge their thoughts so they can think further on a given topic.
I would also categorize myself as a servant leader like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He did not just choose the easy road when he was a leader during the Civil Righ...

I babysit for various families; I do not follow what the children tell me what to do I follow what the parents say. So, therefore I am a follower to the parents and leader to the children when their parents are gone. I also worked at a retirement home for five years, each time we got a new employee I had to lead and show them what to do. I teach Sunday school and there I see myself as a leader as well, this time as a person who leads young children to Christ.
So, I think everyone is a leader in someway in his or her life. Like me took me to realize I was actually a leader by breaking down what I do in my life. It does not matter if you a leader for a group of people or even a leader just to yourself. It is important for being you and changing who are.
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. You also have to know what harmful characteristics a leader may possess to determine if they are good leaders or not.
I generally perceive myself as a quiet leader, someone who leads by example. I demonstrated leadership during my experience in the People to People program and Rutgers Biz Ed. The People to People program took place at Harvard University. It was a week long program taught us leadership qualities, how to prepare for college admissions, and learn how to serve our community. During the time I was in the program I participated in team work activities such as, rock climbing. The activity was done to show that we trusted our team to hold us up and for us to encourage others to climb higher than they thought could be possible.
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I had many issues doing this throughout my project because I am only one person and I can’t be everywhere at once. Thusly made being a leader a drudgery. But I had an incredible set of adults guiding me along the way, who taught me that being a leader was not doing everything myself, being a leader
I first encountered the significance of leadership in the tenth grade. Berry College the largest campus in the U.S. was in search of school ambassadors to serve part in a seminar known as HOBY. To get chosen you had to write an essay describing your leadership roles, and at that moment I thought that I did not have any. I literally did not know what it meant to be a leader. I had to brainstorm till I remembered going through one of the most difficult times of my life. The lack of understanding the English language became one of my biggest obstacles, and even caused me to repeat a chapter of my life. However, I did not cease; I continued to fight and strove to help others who were susceptible of following my steps. I used my story as an example, and hoped that it would make a difference in someone else’s life.
In a sense, I am a leader. However, that does not necessarily mean that I am the person on the front line with everyone following behind me. I am more of a silent leader. I am a leader because of my actions. Rather than go down the path
Leaders lead. They lead by example, by demonstrating and living out organizational values, and by being seen. A good leader will never ask a teammate to do something they are not willing to do. Leaders also clearly understand the central purpose of their organization and ensure it is crystal clear to every member of the team...and they are relentless in pursuing it.
Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
According to Northouse 2010, Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. By this definition, a leader is a person who rules or guides or inspires or influences others. A leader is someone other people are willing to follow, almost without question. A leader may not always make the right decision, but are confident in the decisions that they make. Leaders are not afraid to admit when they are wrong, they accepts responsibility and a leader know when to change direction when a wrong choice has been made. For, even after a few mistakes, a true leader will not lose the confidence of his or her followers; he will rally the followers to move together while creating opportunities for doing the right thing.
What is a leader? Who are chosen to be leader, and why are they chosen? What set these certain individuals aside from everyone else? A leader is someone who can encourage even those with feeble hearts, insecure souls and self-doubting minds. A leader takes not only their vision but everyone’s vision and create one beautiful creation that is seen throughout the world. My experiences with leadership range from the worst to the best. Once holding a great leadership position myself, I can testify the benefits of great leadership and the disadvantages of horrible leadership. Through my experience with great leadership and the effects on the people, it seemed to the naked eye that everyone was thinking the same thing at the same time. In actually it was the leader uniting the members together on one common chord to produce a sound that would remain in the souls. A leader is someone who not only leads, but also encourages people to do their best, share a collectively common idea or passion with a group, and challenge the process of a traditional style.
I believe that leadership is not something that you are born with, but that has to be learned over time. You learn to become a leader from watching other leaders, and also from personal experience. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. Being a leader does not mean you get to boss people around by telling them what to do. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day. A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
Leadership is defined in many different ways. In the Meriam-Webster dictionary it’s defined as a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc. The time when a person holds the position to lead, and lastly the power or ability to lead other people. To me, the definition of leadership means having the confidence, integrity, and ability to lead by example and do what’s right, so others will follow.
As a leader I want to focus more what other people have to offer. I want to focus on what my followers have to say and what ideas they have to bring to the table. In a leadership situation everyone that is supposed to be involved should be involved. No leader should single someone out leaving the rest to sit silent. I should never pick favorites.
